After 143 goals scored against them in 22 defeated games, you could understand the young players of Lockleaze and Horfield Community Football Club losing some of their motivation.

With no manager and only a handful of parents for support, the club almost folded until new coaches helped to turn the club around.

Now confidence is sky high for the Under-14s, who play in Division Five of the Avon Youth League, and currently sit top of the table after three victories on the trot.

Gary Lewis set up the club almost 20 years ago in memory of his father who played for Torquay United but died from a brain tumour.

He said: "I wanted to set up something in his memory and I've always loved football so it seemed a good thing to do. We really struggled this last year, especially after losing so many games, but full credit to the boys , they kept coming back and the team stayed together. Their spirit is fantastic."

In the last six months things have turned around for the club. They were sponsored by Bristol Rovers Team Development Programme and were given a new set of kit and training support. A new manager, Robert Evans, stepped in along with Terry Cross, the assistant coach.

Mr Lewis said: "The training sessions have really turned the club around, the guys have coaching qualifications and they really know how to motivate the boys and talk to them on their level. The boys have improved their fitness and stamina, they can last longer in a game now."

The 18 boys who train every Tuesday at Bonnington Walk, in Lockleaze, include Mr Lewis' twin sons Jordan and Curtis.

"It's a real family affair", said Mr Lewis. "My wife Suzanne is the club secretary and Terry's wife Teresa is the child welfare officer so it's really friendly.

"Although promotion is a distant thing at the moment, confidence is sky high and the boys have superb spirit and determination so who knows. As well as the coaches, we're also really grateful to Ashley Down Old Boys Rugby Club and Bishopston Rugby Club for letting us use their facilities."

The team is hoping to launch an under-eights squad next season. For more information about the club contact Mr Lewis on 07504 441552.
