Clevedon are finally off the mark in the league this season – and off the bottom of South West Two West – after winning 18-14 at Walcot.

They have gone nearly three months without a victory and lost coach Mike Rafter along the way.

But they were 15-0 ahead after 20 minutes when wing Chris Cates had crossed for a brace of tries and scrum-half Steve Johnson had kicked a penalty and a conversion.

Walcot replied with a converted try but Johnson landed another penalty to keep Seasiders in front.

Avonmouth remain second after a 19-16 victory at Torquay Athletic but they had their resolute defence to thank for withstanding a fightback from the Devon side.

‘Mouth’s Tries came from Phil Dickinson, Sean Leabeater, and Andy Taylor with Matt Lawrence landing two conversions.

Fourth-from-bottom Yatton lost for the fifth time in six league matches when they were beaten 27-8 by leaders Taunton.

Alan Walters crossed for Yatton’s only try after Tony Hill had landed a penalty.

Third-from-bottom St Mary’s lost for the fourth game in a row when they were defeated 17-14 by 14-man Paignton.

Saints took an early lead through tries from Martin Cregg and Nathan March try and a penalty and conversion from Charlie Eaton.

But Paignton hit back and held on after they finished the game a player short after hooker Liam Gooding went off injured and the Devon side had used all their replacements.

Cleve are back in the South West One drop zone after losing 20-5 at Cheltenham-based Old Patesians.

The Mangotsfield-based outfit were 20-0 behind at half time before former Bristol centre Jon Pritchard crossed for their only try.
