David Haines, the chairman of the Gloucestershire and Somerset PGA and vice-chairman of the West Region, ended the season in style at Langland Bay, Swansea.

He won his first pro-am of the season in sharing top spot with George Ryall (Players Club) and the player-of-the season Chris Gill (Exeter) on three-under-par 67 at the Gwalia Housing Association event.

The busy Haines, who runs Brean Golf Club as professional-manager, also owns a driving range in Burnham-on-Sea, so his playing opportunities are limited.

It proved to be a hilarious day for Ryall and Andrew Sherborne (Kendleshire).

For the second year running, Sherborne led a team of Welsh rugby legends and presenters from BBC's Scrum V – John Devereux, Huw Llewellyn Davies and Mark Wyatt –into first place in the team event.

But it was close as Ryall's Welsh rugby players, Bleddyn Bowen, Stuart Davies and Brynmor Williams, also carded 86 points.

Ryall said: "I have never known so much ribbing, as no one knew who had won until the prize-giving. It was a great day."

Bethan Popel (Long Ashton) won the English Women's Golf Association Rose Spoon Division I – awarded for the best performance each month.

The five-handicap schoolgirl and Gloucestershire county player carded 44 stableford points – equal to nine under the standard scratch of 74.

David Steele claimed three trophies in the Clevedon finals –the Grandpa Quaich, the Past Captains' Plate and the Ross Goobey Trophy, for which he was partnered by his wife Ruth.

Club champion Ashley Mansell won the Alun Rees 36-hole scratch event.

Golfers who join The Bristol Golf Club this autumn will receive 15 months' membership for the price of 12.

And, as The Bristol is a member of the Crown Golf group, complimentary golf is available on more than 50 other golf courses in the UK.

General manager Ben Laing said: "This is a significant offer as most keen golfers will play more than 20 times during that period."
