Local cycling: Tiernan-Locke crowned king of mountains
Former Bristol University student Jonathon Tiernan-Locke made a flying start to his Sport Beans-Wilier career with a King of the Mountains title and fourth place overall in a Premier Calendar event.
Tiernan-Locke, who joined the team recently from Plowman Craven-Madison, was part of a four-man break entering the final lap of the 100-mile Chas Messenger Trophy Road Race staged on a hilly course in Buckinghamshire on Sunday.

He said: "I had been feeling really comfortable all race, and planned to attack the other three on the climbs on the last lap, but that went out the window when I got out of the saddle and the cramps started."
As the other three riders in the break – Russell Downing (Candi Tv-Marshalls Pasta), Ian Wilkinson (Halfords Bikehut) and Kristian House (Rapha Condor) – made attacks, Tiernan-Locke struggled to stay on terms.
But he added: "I rejoined them with just 500m to go, and had thought about trying to jump straight by – the only problem being I didn't have a jump left!
"Needless to say I lost out in the sprint and took fourth, but had consolidated my lead in the KOM competition in those closing laps."
Wilkinson won the sprint for the line, while Sport Beans' Bristol rider Will Bjergfelt finished in a strong 10th place, leaving him 9th overall in the Premier Calendar standings.
With the injured Marcin Bialoblocki – who is fourth in the Premier Calendar standings after his victory in the Girvan stage race in Scotland last month – due back with Sport Beans around the start of June, there is a buoyant mood within the team.
Tiernan-Locke said: "I haven't been with the team long but off the back of the success at the Girvan, we have the confidence to take it to them now and start attacking. We like to get involved in the races and not sit back."
The next Premier Calendar race – the Abstraction Lincoln Grand Prix – takes place on Sunday.
