Local bragging rights to Yate as they run out deserved winners

YATE Town gained revenge with a 2-0 victory at Cosham Street against local rivals Mangotsfield United.

The victory was the sweeter after United had won by the same scoreline during the first month of the Evo-Stik Southern League south west one

Yate were always the better side and struck to take a fourth minute lead when poor defending by the home side allowed Dave Stone to break clear of the defence to beat goalkeeper Chris Astley.

They should have increased their lead after nine minutes, Mark Badman and Russ Church opened up the Mangotsfield defence, but Stone failed to make contact wiith Church's cross with only goalkeeper Astley to beat.

Minutes later former Mangotsfield player Matt Groves went close to increasing the Yate lead, but was just off target.

The home side went close to equalising when a poor back pass put Tom Knighton in the clear, but goalkeeper Josh Dempsey blocked his shot and shortly after Joe McClennan had a shot saved by Dempsey. Yate defender Tom Warren then went close to putting through his own goal in the 35th minute before Mangotsfield wasted a chance when Mitchell Page created an opening for Joe McClennan, but his shot was off target.

Minutes before half time Stone, who was a constant threat to the Mangotsfield defence, broke clear, but his shot was blocked by Mangotsfield's Lee Marshall

At the start of the second half Yate manager Rob Cousins came on as a substitute for skipper Edd Vahid.

His side quickly struck to increase their lead in the opening minutes of the second half when the dangerous Stone took full advantage of poor defensive play by the Mangotsfield rearguard to give his side a 2-0 lead.

Mangosfield went close to pulling a goal back in the 61st minute when a cross from the left saw Gary Colbourne's header hit the crossbar with the Yate defence clearing the loose ball.

Mangotsfield had a chance when following a corner the ball fell to Harley Purnell, but he failed to hit the target.

The game exploded iin the 81st minute when Yate midfielder Mark Badman and Mangotsfield skipper Geraint Bater both given red cards following a fracas between the two players.
