Bristol BBC radio presenter Sam Mason is at the centre of a storm after she was sacked for making “completely unacceptable” racial comments when ordering a taxi.

Miss Mason, 40, asked for a taxi to take her 14-year-old daughter to her grandparents’ home that was not driven by someone with a turban.

The BBC said she was told to leave after making the telephone call at the weekend.

And last night it emerged that an operator at the taxi firm, Streamline Black and White, was sacked for illegally recording the conversation.

Miss Mason declined to comment when the Bristol Evening Post contacted her.

A BBC spokesman said: "Although Sam Mason's remarks were not made on-air, her comments were completely unacceptable and, for that reason, she has been informed that she will no longer be working for the BBC with immediate effect."

Former BBC Points West presenter Susan Osman, now a BBC News 24 presenter and interfaith minister, said Miss Mason was not a racist.

She said: "Sam Mason and I go back a long way. I have known her ever since HTV days, which is almost 20 years ago, and I have never known her to be a racist.

"She has overcome considerable challenges in her life and this is most unfortunate."

Miss Mason has previously battled with alcoholism, which led to prosecution before Bristol magistrates for speeding.

She was caught travelling at 65mph in a 50mph limit zone while on her way to Weston-super-Mare’s Broadway Lodge alcoholism treatment centre in 2003.

She received a second six-month ban in October that year for driving while disqualified.

She also received a community rehabilitation order after pleading guilty to driving while disqualified, having no insurance and exceeding the speed limit on the A370.

In one in-depth interview with the Bristol Evening Post, she told of how she turned to drink for a “crutch” to help her cope with life.

After working with a counsellor in alcohol rehab, the presenter was invited back to BBC Radio Bristol to fill a prime afternoon slot on September 29.

At the time she said: “I’m chuffed to bits to be joining BBC Radio Bristol and can’t wait to start having fun with all the lovely listeners.”

The following is a transcript of Sam Mason's conversation with the Bristol taxi company, printed in The Sun newspaper on Tuesday.

A transcript of the conversation records how she ordered a taxi to take her 14-year-old daughter from her Clifton house to her grandparents’ home.

Mason then says: “I know this sounds really racist, but I’m not being . . . please, don’t send anyone like, you know what I mean. An English person would be great, a female would be better.”

Operator: “We would class that as being racist. We can’t penalise the Asian drivers and just send an English one.”

Mason: “You’ve managed it before.”

Operator: “Right, OK. I don’t agree with it personally.”

Mason: “It’s not your 14-year-old girl who’s, you know, is it?”

Operator: “Yes, but that’s racist to say you don’t want an Asian driver.”

Mason: “If it were me I wouldn’t care if it had two heads, but it’s my little girl we are talking about.”

Mason is then handed to a male operator and tells him that his female colleague has “a bad attitude”.

She adds: “I work at the BBC. I’m far from racist and that uneducated woman has no right to call me one.”

She says of her daughter: “I don’t want her to turn up with a guy with a turban on, it’s going to freak her out. She’s not used to Asians.

“She’s not racist – her godparents are black.”

“If the Brits are actually questioning if what she said is "racist," then they have problems I didn't even know existed before.

However, this isn't the issue though. The issue is her firing. If she had a conduct clause in her contract, which most people do, then they have every right to let her go. It's that simple.

To say that she can't be racist because she has black godparents, that's just embarrassing. Just because someone has black godparents, doesn't mean you don't don't like another group of people who don't happen to be black.

The UK is seriously backwards, and need to progress.”

“To Mahammed from Hampshire,, if it is illegal to specify a certein race for work/Taxi what ever, then why is it ok for Bristol police force to bar white citizens from applying for work? also why is it ok for an Asian family to specify an Asian Taxi driver? or is it one rule for one race and another for the rest of us? could it not be that Sam Mason's daughter had a bad experience with a foreign speaking driver? ie: language barrier and maybe he happened to be wearing a turbin, 14 year olds aren't all over confident you know, my daughter won't go on a bus because she doesn't understand the drivers, and no way is she racist, she likes everybody, needless to say the couple of times she has used a bus with her friends they happened to have a driver they found hard to communicate with.”

“I see the comments page in yesterdays Evening Post was extremely biased in the favor of those comments made by people who believe Sam's comments were not Racist. Please re-address the balance BEP it was very unrepresentative of the different view points. Yes some of us do buy the News paper and it's very misleading to see select comments all from one view point printed. It is not good journalism BEP.

Mary A - Has it never occurred to you that just may be - the majority do NOT think Sam Mason is racist? Maybe *thats* why there are so many comments saying so?”

    “Absoutely disgusting.

Those of you who are commenting clearly have no idea what the Race Relations Act is all about. Do the research!

It is not just immoral it is potentially illegal and it is a request that someone else also breaks the law. The law is there for a a reason - to stop people from behaving in an unnacceptable manner.

Thos of you who know Bristol will know the problems of racism that exist there.. We should be trying to move things forward and to combat racism.

There is nothing funnier than white / English people lining up to justify and defend a racist.

It is illegal to deny someone work based on race. It is wrong to ask to be served by a white instead of a black or asian person.

I have worked in race relations for over 10 years, I have advised companies on equalities and diversity and assisted in cases even at the High Court and Court of Appeal.

There is far too much racism, right wing xenophobia and poor moral behaviour - the media is as much to blame as the politicians. We have demonised Muslims and Arabs and in doing so, British Asians, Sikhs and in many cases ethnic minorities too.

When will people move forward? Many of us are sick of living in a racist nation.

How many times have we heard " I'm not racist I have balck friends / family..." What stupidity - of course you can be. You Can be black and racist - just goes to show how much you dont know!!!”

    “i just have one question.
how is a 14 year old girl freaked out by a turban??? surely it is sam masons responsibility to educate her daughter on cultural and religious beliefs, and explain 2 her ta persons characteristics are not defined by their beliefs?

maybe her daughter has a genuine phobia of headwear, and miss masons concerns were just misinterpreted. yeah that would explain it...

    ----------------------------

Now this is where this once great country is going wrong. We have a huge influx of immigrants who on arriving are being told that they don't have to worry cos the country will bend over backwards to accommodate them.

Tell me, why is it my responsibility to teach myself, or for us to educate our sons and daughters on cultural and religious beliefs of people who come here to make a better life for themselves?

I have no objection to anyone coming to this country who wants to work hard and contribute to our society etc. But I don't see why it is my responsibility to immerse myself in their culture! Why should I? If I *choose* to - thats fine - but it isn't my "responsibilitty"!! In many cases, they do not attempt to learn our language and culture. Many think they have the right to create the own little homelands in areas of our country.

I believe in give and take and common sense. Anyone is welcome to be here as far as I am concerned as long as they are prepared to adapt to our way of life. We should not be adapting to theirs. This is England!

Now we have this brainwashing that is going on so that if anyone so much as says the wrong word, it is treated as though it ought to be a capital offence!

Political Correctness has ruined this country and those who promote it will not rest until we are all operating in what amounts to a Police State, where the thought police rule every aspect of our lives.

This will not remove racism. It will fuel resentment. It will enthuse the vile BNP and their supporters. When people feel they no longer count in their own country they will begin to join the BNP. First as a protest but when they realise they are getting nowhere with the limp-wristed politicians currently in charge then parties and groups like the BNP will grow in strength. That is how Nazism started in germany. The so-called Politically correct will be responsible!

The BBC has made itself the Champion of Political Correctness which has helped the PC-Brigade to achieve their mission of destroying Great Britain and all it stands for, including its traditions, its history and its achievements. According to them, the only thing Britain ever did was to get involved in slavery. They neglect to mention Britain was instrumental in getting rid of it throughout the world. They also neglect to tell you that the worst element of slavery is the way the Africans sold off their own people to the slave traders!

As far as I am concerned, if Sam Mason wants a 3 foot Irishman with ginger hair to collect her daughter in a taxi, she has every right to ask for one. The BBC should re-instate her. She said what they feel are wrong words off-air and they sacked her. Woss and Bland committed a criminal offence on-air and the Woss still has his grossly over-paid job and received nothing more than a slap on the wrist! Thats the hypocrisy of the BBC! Perhaps Mr Woss has shares the BBC's left wing views or he knows the funny handshake or something?

People should stop trying to control how people think and speak. This is supposed to be a free country.

YES, people should be protected from abuse (and that should work BOTH ways) but this PC Thought Police nonsense supported by the brainwashed, nothing-else-matters, foam at the mouth PC zealots is plain stupid!

Can we have a return to common sense please??”

“She asked for someone who wasn't wearing a turban. In what way is that request actually racist? Many - indeed, the vast majority - of non-whites don't wear turbans, and not everyone who wears a turban is non-white; thus, it has nothing to do with race, and so cannot be in any way racist. The turban is a religious symbol (one of the symbols of Sikhism), and any request not to have a driver wearing one is if anything motived by sectarian-prejudice, rather than racial-prejudice. Now I cannot for one second see any reason why one would wish for a cab driver not to be Sikh, but neither do I think this situation can be can called "racist", and does not merit the media attention which it has received.”
