Part of the tour will take in the recently refurbished and reopened Old Vic theatre.

The theatre underwent a multi-million-pound refurbishment after it was closed for 18 months and the Queen is to get a tour of the historic building and will also be treated to a special performance of its Christmas spectacular – Peter Pan.

The visit is one of the final public engagements of what has been an incredibly busy year for the Royal couple. The Queen has celebrated her Diamond Jubilee with a series of major events and also played a prominent role in this summer's Olympic Games.

Full details of the event - including timings - are not being made public for security reasons but the royal couple are spending the whole day visiting various attractions and functions in Bristol.

The couple are arriving by Royal Train and the tour will include a visit to the Bailey Caravans factory in Ashton Vale.

The party will also take a tour of the M Shed museum and will attend a special lunch hosted by the city council.

A visit to a community centre in Hartcliffe is also on the agenda where she will meet staff before unveiling a plaque to mark the occasion.

During the visit she will meet a group of small business owners based at the centre along with staff and members of the public who use the centre.

Today's visit to Bristol will be the first chance people in the city will get to play their own part in this year's royal celebrations.

As part of her Jubilee tour of the country in May the closest the Queen got to the city was Yeovil.

The 86-year-old has cut down on her public engagements this year due to her advancing years and Prince Philip, who is 91, has also been forced to cut back on his work and public appearances due to a series of health problems throughout the year.

The Duke missed half of this summer's jubilee celebrations when he was hospitalised as a result of a bladder infection.

The royal visit is also likely to be one of the first high-profile duties of Bristol's first ever elected mayor following yesterday's vote.

The new mayor will have the job of officially welcoming the monarch and her husband to the city for the day's events.

It will be only the third time in a decade that the Queen has come to the city with the last visit taking place more than seven years ago.

On her most recent trip to the Bristol area the Queen came to North Somerset and Knowle West but did not venture into the centre of Bristol.

Thousands of people are expected to line the streets and plans are being put in place to make sure the event goes off with the minimum of disruption and congestion for the city.

Despite her age the monarch is still admired for her ferocious work ethic and over the last four weeks she has attended a series of events in and around the capital.

Her most recent state duties involved taking part in the Remembrance Sunday ceremonies.

The ceremony at the Cenotaph is still seen as one of the most important public events of the year in the Royal Household.

Her duties have included hosting a state banquet for the visiting Indonesian president and an unveiling of a new stained glass window in central London to mark her Diamond Jubilee.

UPDATE 8.50AM:

A protest group is planning to be at the Old Vic during the Queen's visit. They say they will have Police "protest liaison officers" with them.

UPDATE 10.35AM

The Queen has arrived at Bailey's caravan factory.

Crowds are gathering in King Street outside the Old Vic.

According to Richard Palmer, royal correspondent at the Daily Express, the Queen is wearing a Stewart Parvin pink double breasted coat and Rachel Trevor-Morgan hat.

UPDATE 11.30AM

The Queen is on her way to the Old Vic, where crowds are waiting.

Among them is Jen Appleford, of Kingswood, with her corgi Lily.

Jen said: "We are hoping the Queen will notice Lily and it would be nice if she gave us a wave."

Bristol’s newly elected mayor George Ferguson will be presenting the Queen with a set of Bristol Pound notes during her Jubilee tour of Bristol today at the M Shed, according to the group behind the Bristol Pound.

There was also a small anti-royal protest group at the Old Vic this morning.

UPDATE 11.50AM

The Queen will be leaving King Street soon to make her way to the next stop on her Bristol tour.

Crowds in King Street are still waiting, hoping to meet her when she emerges from the Old Vic.

VIDEO OF THE QUEEN AT BRISTOL OLD VIC. ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW:

Crowds have already started to gather outside M shed.

UPDATE 12.05PM

The Queen has now left the Old Vic and is making her way to M shed.

She was presented with flowers by local school children but did not walk around the gathered crowds, some of whom were disappointed.

Rosemary Thompson, of Portishead, said: "It was lovely that the kids got to give her posies and everything, but I was disappointed that she did not turn around and wave at the crowds.

"I was hoping to have some good photos to show at work tomorrow. But it was still lovely to see her."

Meanwhile, at M shed, the new mayor George Ferguson is wearing his red tartan trousers to meet the Queen - the ones he wore to collect his CBE.

UPDATE 12.10PM

The Queen has just arrived at M shed.

Schoolchildren are singing to her in the foyer.

UPDATE 12:50PM

The Queen is now inside the M shed.

The cranes outside the museum bowed as she went in.

She was handed a Bristol Blue Glass penny in commemoration of the day, a replica of which will be kept at the M shed.

Before she leaves this afternoon she will be given a show by the Pyronaut boat outside the museum.

Bristol Lord Mayor Peter Main told ThisisBristol: "It has been a huge honour to welcome the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh to Bristol today.

"In particular to host a civic reception and lunch in the wonderful surroundings of the M shed.

"Bristol has many fond memories of royal visits by the Queen during her 60-year reign and today's visit will join the history books."

The newly-elected mayor George Ferguson said: "It has been a particular privilege to welcome Her Majesty the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh to Bristol in my first week as Mayor, and to have the opportunity to demonstrate what a genuinely warm and welcoming city we are.

"The visit has showcased the strength and diversity of our great city - from successful businesses to flourishing culture and strong community organisations."

UPDATE 2.20PM

The Queen has just left M shed to make her way to Hartcliffe.

The Queen has left Hartcliffe and Withywood Ventures, The Gatehouse Centre in Hareclive Road, Hartcliffe.

“I hope Queenie brought the Corgis with her , because whilst at Ashton Vale she could have took advantage of the £150 million dog walking facility. The corgis would have loved it , and she would have been one of the first people to ever use it.

Westwardy- Nothing wrong with Hatrtcliffe other than people puting it down, and the majority of them have never been near it.”

Keep lapping it up you brainwashed peasants.”

“what a shame the weather is so terrible - I would have loved to have gone to see her Majesty - unfortunately had to work! She has worked harder during her life than just about anyone else in this country. The type of work she does is different to some others - but is just as demanding. Every country has a head of state of some description - she is ours so to all the dissenting voices out there - TOUGH !!!”

    “God Save the Queen.

She represents all that is good and great about our green and pleasant land.

If the layabouts who are disrespecting her on this forum ever tried committing 1% of the dedication shown by HRH then they would surely collapse from exhaustion and return to the benefits safety net from which they were spawned.

    Long Live the Queen.”

“I agree with benjiman, it does seem a bit of a waste. Looking at the photos it would appear that there aren't many Bristolians trying to get out and see her either, now that might be the weather or simply that no-one is really that bothered!

I also find it quite telling that despite the Queen, our monarch and Head of State being very nearby, neither of my childrens schools have made any kind of effort to go and see her (Primary & Senior). That to me says it all.

Not sure how it helps Bristol as I don't believe any tourists have ever visited anywhere because its where "the Queen once visited"!”
