The Liberal Democrats have revealed their plans for Bristol after Thursday night's emphatic victory in the local elections.

The party, which took power after the minority Labour administration quit in February, has increased from 32 of the council's 70 seats to 36, defeating several former Labour cabinet members, including former Labour leader Peter Hammond (Southmead), in the process.

Party leader Barbara Janke said: "Bristol's first ever Lib Dem majority administration will act quickly and effectively to clear up the mess left by Labour in key areas of the council's activity.

"We aim to make progress with a range of manifesto commitments over the coming year to make Bristol a better place to live and work in – economically stronger, environmentally greener and politically more democratic."

The Lib Dems say they plan to:

  • Give Bristol strong, competent leadership as it emerges from recession.

  • More open government and devolving more power to communities.

  • Raise the city's profile nationally and in Europe, and promote firms at the cutting edge of the digital revolution.

  • Build a new school at Ashley Down, and make sure there is no repeat in 2010 of this year's primary school places fiasco.

  • Cancel plans for an incinerator and find better and cheaper ways of dealing with the city's waste.

  • Resist the Government's threat to force Bristol to accept housing in the green belt.

“How about no football stadium or housing on greenbelt. Greenbelt is greenbelt. Houses and a stadium (paid for entirely by BCC not bristol tax payers) on brownfield. Perhaps they could buy the vast expanse of land next to temple meads (which we've spent £30m on preparing).”

“AngusG, the Lib-Dems didn't 'walk away' in 2007 but lost control because the Tories formed an alliance with Labour so forming a majority.”

“If it's now such a priority to build a school at Ashley Down (which I don't doyubt it is), why didn't the LibDems do it while they were in power less than 2 years ago - before they "walked away" in the same way they slated Labour for doing this year? After all, the children needing those places this September were already born and were probably already living in the area so they'd hopefully get a good school place. Schools do take a couple of years to build.”

“Erm, shouldn't they have released a manifesto (outlining what they would do if they canme to power) before the polls opened?”

“No School at Ashley down, instead planning permission for the cricket club to grow and improve to keep hosting international level cricket.”

“I look forward to my new Lib Dem councillor listening to the views of our community and addressing the problems which our previous Councillors have not had the courage to tackle, for fear of annoying their party bosses. Independence of thought and putting the consituency first instead of their party line would be welcome”

“Why all the fuss about having a hung council in Bristol for all these years. We've been asking for North Spmerset Council to be hung for years.”
