This is Bristol

I been reading about the 20mph on all Bristol roads. Although it will probably ruin the engine driving that slow, it makes sense.

A little over a year ago through the post we received a speeding fine. We were told on the A38 we drove at 40mph in a 30mph limit. We couldn't argue but never exceeding the speed limit couldn't believe it, but we paid up.

Now when we are out in the country we drive strictly to the limit. We have been shouted at, horns blown and even told we shouldn't be on the road at our age – late 70s. So what is going to happen when we do drive at 20mph in the said zones? I dread to think. Personally we think we are in more danger reading the speedometer and not the roads than we ever were.

By the way we have been driving for 50 years and have never been close to having an accident, although we have seen many avoidable accidents by idiotic drivers.

● I HAVE been a Whitehall resident living on the main road for the past 21 years and have noticed that there are certain motorists and bikers that do not seem to obey a 30mph speed limit on a major road.

I have seen and heard, especially at evening times, motor-bikers roaring along Whitehall Road at possibly 70 or 80mph.

There does not seem to be any speed limit signs on this road, and I believe that in the safety of pedestrians the council should impose traffic speed regulations and more road signs.

It does surprise me that someone has not been killed on this road yet, although I think it is only a matter of time.

I am afraid that I do disagree with the article by Mr E Smith of Chipping Sodbury dated Monday, August 31 that reducing the speed limit in Bristol to 20mph is unnecessary.

But I do think the article on Thursday, September 3 by a motor group that the council is to impose a 20mph limit in the Easton and Lawrence Hill areas is a good thing.

I do think people who do not live on main roads realise the speeds that some vehicles and bikers get up to on the roads.

I am a motorist myself and have been driving for 37 years and in built-up areas you should obey a 20 or 30mph limit in the safety of all road users. Driving at speed above the given speed limit on residential roads or major city roads are not the answer, so cut your speed out there.

Mr M Hiles,

Whitehall.
