Letter of the day: Traffic free city centre was bliss
BECAUSE of the Bristol half-marathon the city centre was cordoned off and traffic diverted.
Then after the runners had finished there was a wonderful time when the barriers were still up and the centre was free of roaring and polluting vehicles.

The 2012 Bristol Half Marathon led to the city centre being free of traffic, says reader Steve Roberts
And it was glorious! Pedestrians walked around the roads by the Hippodrome and Baldwin Street, you could hear the footfall and the murmur of people talking, there was no snarling traffic and no edginess. This was simply wonderful. I saw legions of smiling pedestrians and one happy person pedalling on his bike with no traffic around.
This really was a "living heart for Bristol".

They ban traffic in some continental cities one Sunday a month – if we did the same as an experiment it would make Bristol a far more civilised and nicer place to live.
Brunel would surely approve.
