Let's keep up the pace, Bristol coach Hull tells his men
Paul Hull has called for more of the same from his Bristol players after they continued their seemingly unstoppable march back to the Guinness Premiership with another comfortable win.
Bristol RUFC moved nine points clear of second-placed Exeter – who face London Welsh today – with a 31-15 victory over Cornish Pirates at the Memorial Stadium yesterday.
The win was Bristol's eighth league success in a row – seven of which have been accompanied by a bonus point – and underlined their status as the form team in the Championship.
And head coach Hull, whose side could be guaranteed a place in the end-of-season play-offs by this evening if results elsewhere go their way, simply wants his players to keep up the good work.
"We're just pleased to have a back-to-back performance from last week," said Hull, whose side won 25-16 at Exeter six days ago.
"It was a good victory away at Exeter – but we needed to back that up with another good victory at home and we've done that. We're getting ruthless in certain areas of the game – and the game was done and dusted by half-time.
"It was an interesting challenge this week because, as I said to the players, we've finished 2009 on a high, we're top of the table for the first time – and it was a test to defend that position in the league.
"As it turned out, the boys showed real commitment, enthusiasm and physicality in the first half to kill the game off.
"We want to consolidate the position we're in now and maintain the momentum so we feel confident going into the play-offs. That's the focus for us now."
Hull had made six changes to the side that won at Exeter – and was rewarded with impressive performances from those he brought in, with Tom Arscott, Luke Eves, Robbie Shaw, Wayne Thompson, Mariano Sambucetti and Iain Grieve among Bristol's better performers.
"We made six changes and still kept the momentum going strongly. I was pleased that those who came in did well," said Hull.
"That was key – not only for them as individuals but for us as a squad. It's a tricky thing, because consistency in selection is important but you still need to freshen up from time to time.
"We do want to give people opportunities to play and show what they can do – and every one of those guys who came in did well. Six people came in and we didn't drop off at all, which was really good."
Prop Thompson (bicep) and flanker Grieve (neck) both suffered injuries and had to leave the field – but neither problem is thought to be serious.

“Exeter lost again today - three defeats in a row - so Bristol are in pole position to finish top of the Championship league.
It's just a pity it will count for very little because of the rugby authorities' unbelievably crass decision to allow the top eight teams in the league at the end of the league season to play off for the one promotion spot.
Might as well not bother with the regular league season at all.”
