I fully agree with Kingswood Tory MP Chris Skidmore who is calling for a parliamentary debate on whether St George's Day should be celebrated as a national holiday (Post 19 April).

If we love England, and I am sure thousands do, we should not forget St George, our Patron Saint of England. Englishmen.

All over the world those who love their homeland and 'mother country' mark St George's Day (April 23) in some quiet way, as befits our national character.

Many churches and public buildings fly the red cross of St George in honour of our patron saint who symbolises the never ending war of good against evil.

So let's all get together and support Kingswood Tory MP Chris Skidmore and hope he can get his message across loud and clear to Premier David Cameron and our Queen.

Many other countries celebrate in style with their patron saints, such as St Patrick in Ireland.

Why not our green and pleasant land, England?

Good luck Mr Skidmore on your quest for a parliamentary debate.

I am sure if he is successful millions of British people up and down the country will raise a glass or two in honour to the spirit of St George.

I know I will.

“Everyone who loves England should celebrate St.George's day if they wish to, bank holiday or no bank holiday. If the goverment won't make April 23rd a public holiday book a day off work anyway!”

“Make April the 23rd a national holiday. A time to be proud to be English, a time for the local community to get together, a time to meet up with friends/family, maybe have a party, sounds good to me.

FOR ENGLAND, SHAKESPEARE AND ST. GEORGE.

“Why must we have a holiday based on a medieval myth that some knight slew a dragon? (they don't exist). I would favour the summer solstice. Right in the middle of the year, likely to be warm & sunny and you have the maximum daylight.”
