A SPECIAL supplementary school in St George is aiming to help children improve their grades after lessons.

Champions Fun Learning Centre, based in Church Road, is a registered charity, and uses volunteers to help children with English, maths, and science from Key Stage One up to GCSE.

All of the tutors are volunteers, and include qualified teachers, as well as teaching assistants and those with no teaching experience but who want to help.

Around 150 children attend the school in the evenings and on Saturdays – most of whom are underachieving and come from a diverse ethnic background.

Parents pay a small monthly fee to keep the centre running and can tailor what their child learns to help them improve in particular subjects.

The learning centre's philosophy is that a little extra work at least once a week will see children develop confidence and learn skills that will supplement their school curriculum.

Volunteer Anne Pernet said: "They are really lovely children and are keen to learn.

"We rely mainly on funding, and try to fill a gap to help children improve themselves."
