Winterbourne are on the up as they bid to beat the drop in Bristol & Somerset after claiming their second win of the campaign.

Opening bowler Adam Moore's 7-33 – his best ever figures – helped the club to a six-wicket victory against Lansdown.

The South Gloucestershire side were adrift at the foot of the table before the win, but now those above them are in sight.

Skipper Ian Rawlings believes five wins will see Winterbourne remain in this division for a third summer.

He said: "It has been a bit tough this year. But – far from it – survival is not insurmountable because everyone is beating everyone else in this division.

"I'm looking at the matches with Stapleton, North Perrott and Minehead (for wins). Hopefully, we can pick up a couple more wins – but five wins should be enough to stay up.

"There is plenty of optimism in the camp. No other team are a million miles away; everyone is catchable."

"When we first played Lansdown earlier this summer we lost to them by two wickets but that was a match we should have won," he added.

"We also had Stapleton 100-8 but they went on to score 180 and beat us by 40 runs.

"Against (leaders) Clevedon we were on top for large parts of the game but they had a big batting partnership and got away from us. If these results had gone our way then we would have been in mid-table."

Winterbourne were also handed two heavy blows in the winter. South African all-rounder Wayne Kylander returned to Frenchay, then – in the week prior to the first match of the season – opening batsman Garreth Elphick departed for Bedminster.

Rawlings added: "It was a blow to a certain extent but we now have other guys who have been given an opportunity. We have other guys who want to play for the club.

"We have guys such as Jack Dempsey who is batting at No 3 and opening the bowling. He is a club player and wants to play for Winterbourne.

"He started this summer in our seconds but, after some good performances, he was called up to the first team.

"He has scored some runs for us this summer without having a massive knock."

Rawlings is also delighted with his bowling attack.

Moore has claimed 33 wickets so far this summer and is getting plenty of support from fellow opening bowler Glynn Howells.

"Adam has taken 33 wickets by the halfway stage of the season. That stat speaks for itself because people would be happy with 30 wickets for the season," he added.

"Adam opens the bowling and does the lion's share of the work, but is well assisted by Glynn Howells' left arm spin."
