Lawrence Rovers romp to derby victory
Star Match: Lawrence Weston 0 Lawrence Rovers 6: Lawrence Rovers earned the local bragging rights with a thumping victory over Suburban League neighbours Lawrence Weston.
After an even first half Lawrence Rovers, who play in the Senior Division of the District League, dominated proceedings to run out comfortable winners.
Lawrence Rovers led only 1-0 at half-time thanks to Ryan Fogarty, but they were always in charge after Derren Hann scored their second goal early in the second half. Kai Holmes struck twice and substitute Widge Summerill also weighed in with a double in the last 15 minutes to complete the scoring.
Rovers' manager Bernie Harrington said: "The first half was even, although we forced a couple of good saves from their keeper. In the second half we started well and upped our game, as well as making a couple of tactical changes on the pitch."
The first chance of the match fell to Lawrence Weston. Joe Morris played a magnificent crossfield pass to Andy Mankowski on the right wing but, from his centre, Billy Booker was unable to direct his header on target.
The game swung from end to end with neither side able to find a breakthrough until Rovers' Dray Fray was fouled in the box by Arron Anglin following a great through ball by Kelvin Naplewski. Goalkeeper Fogarty stepped forward to take the penalty and fired his spot-kick beautifully into the bottom left hand corner of the net.
Rovers were the only team in the game in the second half and quickly doubled their advantage. Denny Chapman dropped off from the front and found Hann out wide in acres of space, and the Rovers man ran on to fire past keeper Luke Clark, who got a hand on the shot but was unable to keep it out.
Holmes scored the third after a sensational Daniel Morne pass from the halfway line went over Lawrence Weston's two centre-backs. This allowed Holmes to use his pace and get behind the defence before rounding Clark and scoring.
Rovers increased their lead when Chapman, receiving the ball on the right of the penalty area, beat his marker before pulling the ball for Summerill to score with his first touch of the game from eight yards.
More Chapman magic set up Rovers' fifth goal. His superb vision saw him play a beautifully weighted through ball to Holmes, who scored at the second attempt after his first effort had been blocked.
Lawrence Weston's miserable afternoon was completed with Rovers scoring a sixth in the last minute of the game – and again Chapman was the architect.
He ran down the left wing, beating the full-back with ease and moving into the penalty area before playing the ball back for Summerill, who was left with another simple finish from 10 yards.
