A man is fighting for his life after being knocked down while on a pedestrian crossing in Bristol.

The man, who is in his twenties, was crossing Temple Way at 8.50pm on Saturday when he was struck by a silver Jeep Cherokee which had just turned left out of Old Market Street.

The pedestrian was taken to Frenchay Hospital where he was reported to be in a "life threatening condition" last night.

Police know there were a number of people in the area at the time and are trying to track down details of a First Bus also believed to have been in the area at the time.

Anyone with information or who may have witnessed the collision is asked to contact the Bristol police Collision Investigation Unit on 0845 4567000, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

“I was at that junction about 10 minutes earlier. Poor young man, I do hope he gets better soon.

I'm really pleased with the new pedestrian crossings, far better than braving the underpass. But the big problem with them is pedestrians can't see the green man going from green to red unless they are on the pavement a foot or so back from the kerb. Potentially this is what caused this accident.

I find it far safer to cross a little to the side of the crossing, where bikes are meant to stop, so that I can at least see the red light that's stopping the driver.”

“IF (noticed i said if) the pedestrian walked out without looking or with headphones on etc.. then it was really sill wasen't it. i've lost count of the number oftime i've almost hit pedestrians because they walk out at crossings/stepping off pavements automatically thinking you must stop for them, unless of course the man is green at a crossing/they have right at zebra etc.. That sad i hope this wasen't the case and hope he gets well soon”

“I cannot believe how these comments tend to deviate from the actual story all the time. Some poor bloke is lying in intensive care and all you can think about Tony is questioning what I see every day.”

“to be honest until a witness comes forward,no-one will know the truth about who done what.did he walk out infront of traffic or did the driver jump the lights?
i may me being stupid but was it a hit and run?all it says is the poor man was hit by a silver Jeep Cherokee.it says nothing about it driving off leaving the crime scene.
i just wish him a swift and full recovery.”
