Land Rover rescued from mudflats
Rescue crews had to pull a Land Rover to safety after it became stuck on the treacherous mudflats at Brean.
Burnham Area Rescue Boat was alerted at 3.15pm, on July 13, after the vehicle, with three people inside, was spotted almost half a mile from the shore by concerned beach warden Dave Furber.
Six Barb crew members used the charity's tractor and ropes to haul the Land Rover up the beach on to the hard sand before the evening high tide.
The vehicle's owners, who are from the West Midlands and on holiday at a Brean caravan park, made a generous donation to Barb to cover its costs.
Barb operations manager Steve Perks said: "The owners had been testing out the vehicle in the mud and seemed to be completely oblivious to the danger they were putting themselves in.
"Our advice is to head the warning signs and stay well clear of the mud."
The incident follows several others along the Burnham-on-Sea coastline during the first half of this year.
In May, a huge rescue attempt failed to save a van from the incoming tide on Burnham beach, and in April a boat and trailer were towed to safety at Brean.
In March a car got stuck on the mudflats and in February, a quad bike got into difficulty on Burnham beach.
Barb is a 17-year-old registered charity that has helped and rescued more than 200 people. The organisation is manned entirely by volunteers, has two hovercrafts and a rescue boat.
