Councillors are being urged tonight to give the go-ahead for a Sainsbury's supermarket at Bristol Rovers' ground in Horfield.

The recommendation opens the door to the football club moving to a new £40 million stadium in Stoke Gifford.

The club cannot afford a new home without the Sainsbury's money to help fund the move.

Councillors will meet at 6pm in City Hall tonight to discuss the decision.

The club has entered into a unique partnership with the University of the West of England to build the new stadium.

It would be sited on land near the MoD procurement base at Abbeywood.

In July last year, South Gloucestershire Council approved plans for the stadium subject to conditions.

But if approval is given, the plan will be put before the Secretary of State for a final decision.

You can view the full council papers here.

“C'mon guys now is not the time to argue. This is something we have waited for for 30 years. I sat there in the chamber at 3-1 down thinking here we go again then the next 4 voted in favour. The eye opener was the chairman who said that though his vote was not required he intended to vote in favour as it was long overdue that Bristol joined the modern world.

Steve Comer the Lib/Dem councillor and s/t holder almost had us in tears with his impassioned speech but it worked.

Onwards and upwards Gas and major congrats to Nick Higgs and the rest of the board. Shame Denis Dunford isnt here to enjoy it but i'm sure he was there in spirit.

And what an atmosphere at the Mem after the meeting.”

we don;t have a bullying chairman who thinks he can get away with building on green belt land and riding roughshod over genuine local concerns.

However low your opinion is of Rovers, we have done it the fair and proper way. Higgs may not be a massively rich man, or a great employer of managers, but we isn;t involved in large an successful construction projects by accident you know.”

“Finally, finally, finally, we are going to get our new stadium......... At last BCC have done something that they can be proud of. a decision that drags Bristol into the 21st century. A big, big thank you must go to Nick Higgs and the board for helping to get what every Rovers fan has wanted for the last 25 years........

Now, following Gloucestershire's redevelopment of the County Ground, BCC only have Bristol City''s new stadium to go....

    C'mon Bristol, lets make it a hat-trick......”

    “@londongas & ARBIE0489:

As I've said I'm pleased for you chaps however, just keep in mind that City have got planning permission for the redevelopment of AG and the new ground has been approved by the council, twice and been approved by no less the two home secretarys.

Due to, now, about a dozen people who claim a former tip is a VG, it hasn't been built yet so my well meant advice is to believe it when you start seeing the groundworks & steel going up!”

    “great news, Rovers salvation perhaps.
presumably its only just a final formality going before the Sec of State.
now lets "combine" our efforts to remain in the Div 2 -at least for this season
    next we higher our sights”

“Good luck to you because Bristol needs to step into the 21st Century.

I want to see both football clubs and the rugby & cricket clubs in new stadia.

That being said, believe it when you see it ecause I suspect you haven't heard the last of the batty old bird and a few dozen like her as we have found to our cost over at LA.

Now, if we can both stsy in the Divisions we're in this season, that might just cheer us all up!

As I said at the time, Ward will keep you up.”
