Run by the University of Bristol in partnership with Bristol City Council and local community groups, Know Your Bristol is a series of free public events exploring local heritage. Members of the public are invited to come and join us to explore their local history as well as contributing to it themselves. We invite members of the public to bring their own stories about each area, including family history and memories of the location. We would also encourage people to bring along objects such as films, family photographs, and historical artefacts.

Digital images of objects brought in and interviews recorded on the day will be contributed to Bristol City Council's Know Your Place project, allowing people to explore their local history through an interactive map website.

Everyone is warmly invited to attend our up coming events and bring their stories of the places to share with the Know Your Bristol team.

“The Know Your Bristol events are similar to Mshed in that they are bringing together local peoples stories of Bristol to create a local history and we are working with them, hopefully having some of the material gathered through the Know Your events displayed there-hence why the final event is being held there.

In contrast to Mshed though, Know Your Bristol is working with and focusing on specific places and communities in Bristol, with an event held at each, inviting memories and stories about those places to build up a local history about them. The events also encourage members of the public to come along and share their stories and contribute them to the local archives.

The events are also being run in partnership with the Bristol City Council Know Your Place project. This is an open-access interactive map website where layers of historic maps are overlaid on the modern map of the city, allowing users to explore the historic landscape underneath their feet, and the evolution of their localities.

The work of the Know Your Bristol project is therefore complimenting and contributing to the Msheds work whilst also forming another easily accessible local history archive.”
