GIANT knitted characters from the nativity scene have appeared in a Yate shop to raise money for charity.

The life-sized knitted Mary, Joseph, shepherds, kings and sheep at the St Peter's Hospice shop were produced by the Knutty Knitters.

The group, formed from friends who used to work together at St Theresa's Catholic Primary School in Horfield, took on the challenge in honour of friend Christine Walsh who died of bowel cancer at St Peter's Hospice last December.

The Knitivity will tour churches, schools and St Peter's Hospice sites over the coming weeks.

Alison Spurrell, said: "When we began the 'Knitivity' project we adapted patterns given in a magazine and we had no idea how big the figures would turn out. It was a bit of a surprise when they turned out to be life-sized but they look fabulous.

"We have been working on the scene since May and it's been a great way for us all to get together."

Petra Vesela community fundraiser at St Peter's Hospice said: "The amount of time and effort these ladies have put into this project is phenomenal and we couldn't be more grateful. The money raised is essential for us to continue our work helping people like Christine in Bristol."
