Bristol City's quest for Category Two status has suffered a setback with Tim Kirk's decision to quit as academy director.

Recruited in the summer to oversee the commercial and operational side of the Championship club's youth development system, the resignation of Kirk raises questions about his initial appointment.

City's head of communications Adam Baker said: "The ramping up of the commercial and operational side of the academy to get ready for Category Two status were elements of the job Tim did not enjoy.

"His workload was becoming more and more and, in the end, he felt the role was not for him.

"He subsequently offered his resignation and it has been accepted."

Chief operating officer Guy Price, formerly City's chief executive, will take over Kirk's duties until a successor is found.

A period of upheaval and change behind the scenes at Ashton Gate continued this week with the resignation of experienced football secretary Michelle McDonald. She left after 14 years in the job.
