The King family – Peter and his son Simon – were among the awards in the North Somerset club's timed and observation trial, at Pensford, on Saturday evening.

Peter was winner of the hour-long, 10-lap contest at Mannings and Simon was the last of the first-class awards.

Peter was first to complete the event for the Charlies of Eastville Trophy and he also outshone his rivals in the half-dozen observed sections.

Colin Crease was outright winner of the West Wilts club's James Cup event at Westwood, near Bradford-on-Avon, the following day.

After three laps of 14 sections in Beckie Addie Woods, the Frome club-man had lost 11 marks less than Lee Hassall, with Crewkerne youngster Ben Bramwell, a further seven marks in the red, in third place.

Most marks were lost in the fifth, sixth, seventh, ninth and 13th sections.

Kent grass racer Martyn Sturgeon won the main national and open finals in the Swindon club's first meeting of the year, at Dauntsey, on Sunday.

He led both four-lap events from start to finish and he was also unbeaten in all his qualifying heats.

Bristol's Rod Melksham was his closest rival in the national event, but he had a bad start in the Open and it was Martyn Williams, from Newent, and Swindon's John Jefferies, who put Sturgeon under pressure from the start.

Chippenham's Stephen Sword is the new leader of the 250cc class in the British Motocross Championships.

He finished third in the first race in the third round at Brampton, in Cumbria, and second in the second race.

Shaun Simpson, who led the title chase after the previous round at Langrish, in Hampshire, was a non-starter after breaking a leg in a practice spill in Holland in mid-week.

Honda's Brad Anderson won both open-class races and looks to be heading towards his first major title.
