Regular first-class award winner Peter King went one better when he won the main award in the BSSA's Timed and Observation Trial in cold and bleak Filers Woods at Backwell Hill, near Lulsgate, on Sunday.

Matt Ridgeway, who lost out to Tom Smith for the main award in the Enduro Class, was first to complete the hour-long, 11-lap event, but King finished in his wheel tracks and he lost only 14 marks on observation, all in the fourth section, where a climb over slippery tree roots penalised all 45 starters.

Runner-up Jeremy Cross, who was slower than King, lost 13 marks in the same section and three more on a further climb over roots in the final section.

Wilts Border clubman Craig Talbot came close to defeating 14-times Wessex Centre champion Colin Crease in the second round of the series on home ground in the Border Cup event at Draycot Cerne, near Chippenham, the same day.

In an event staged over four laps of 10 sections in woodland going, Talbot was heading for victory when he spun to a halt on a steep climb over banks in the last section on his last lap after completing the same section without penalty on his previous laps.

Over-40 and over-50 class winners Tim Wheeler and Martin Strang dropped 10 marks each on a less demanding course.

After finishing second to Yeovil's Ricky Wiggins in the first four rounds of the South West Centre Championship, Exmoor clubman Nick Baker was edged into second place by Cornwall area champion in the Devonport Club's trial at a new venue at Clearbrook, near Plymouth.

He led the event after two laps, but lost out on the Premier award after losing nine marks to Hancock's four on the final lap.
