Keynsham toppled by Avonside's shock win
North Somerset Cricket League Saturday Conference round-up:
Avonside produced the shock of the day to hand Division V joint leaders Keynsham 3rds their second defeat of the season.
The Riverbankmen had been joint bottom before the start of play, with only one previous win this summer, but they reached their target of 167 inside 29 overs for the loss of eight wickets.
Visitors Avonside started indifferently, losing two early wickets to Jack Boulton. But Colin Willie (43) and Dean Willie (37) led the recovery and received good support from Ian Taylor (21) and Anthony Iles (27).
Sam Wheller induced a mini-collapse with two wickets for Keynsham but Avonside were not to be denied. Wheller had earlier held his side's innings together with 94 – his second score above 90 in a week.
Dyrham and Hinton recorded their 32nd consecutive win in Division I, beating Saltford Fairway by 138 runs.
They were given an excellent start by their two former Saltford Fairway players – Kevin Sibley made 51 off 59 balls and Martin Millard 36 from 33 – before Rich Elliott followed up with his first half-century of the summer.
Despite a mini-collapse, Andrew Lewis, with 45 off just 29 deliveries, ensured that the visitors posted 270-7 – their highest score so far this summer.
Any hopes Saltford Fairway had soon evaporated with the loss of three quick wickets. A fourth-wicket partnership between Alex Parsons (37) and Ben Fillingham (35) ensured that they reached three figures, but three wickets from Matt Garland late on ended the innings inside 23 overs.
Wrington moved into third place after a comprehensive six-wicket home win against lowly Backwell Flax Bourton. Eddie Farrow took 4-21 as the Flax were dismissed for 106.
Whitchurch 2nds lost top spot in Division II after their fixture with Exiles (Bath) was abandoned.
Shoscombe take over after inflicting a third defeat in a row on visitors Brislington 3rds, who never properly recovered from a poor start which saw them lose five cheap wickets.
Ian Dowding (47) and Neil Peacock (66) staged a recovery before both were dismissed by Sam Martin. A second- wicket partnership between Tom Ballinger (60), his second half-century within a fortnight, and Adam Deverill (36) ensured the home side reached their target of 159 with more than six overs remaining.
Knowle West returned to winning ways, beating Bristol 3rds by 13 runs in a high-scoring match.
The Westers' innings was built around opener Darren Weeks, who slammed 107, his first century since his return to the club. The innings included 13 fours and 5 sixes.
Skipper Clive Bailey weighed in with 48 to help his side post 246-4.
Bristol started their response indifferently, slipping to 49-3 as Russell Lippett took three wickets. They appeared out of the game when Simon Moorcroft departed for 24 to leave them 98-5, but a fine 65 from Darren Hooey (7 fours and 4 sixes) in a 68-run sixth-wicket partnership with Richard Mann (30) revived their hopes.
Arulananthum Nanthan (33) and Neil Emery (23 not out) took Bristol to within 13 runs of victory before they lost their last wicket with three balls remaining.
Dyrham and Hinton 2nds won the top-of-the-table Division III battle, ending Harptree Village's unbeaten start in convincing style with a nine-wicket victory.
The Harps started positively but only Simon Matthews (40) offered prolonged resistance before falling to Matt Davey, who finished with 5-16. The home side cruised to their target of 100, John England top-scoring with 54 not out.
Midsomer Norton Methodists remain top of Division IV after winning their derby against Midsomer Norton 4ths by five wickets with four balls to spare.
Chasing 159 to win, the Methodists slipped to 16-2, both wickets falling to promising youngster Sam Cottle. A 57-run partnership between Richard Wilkins and David Sackett brought them back into the game before each was dismissed for 27 within two overs.
Craig Eyles, who also made 27, rebuilt the innings and unbeaten scores of 24 by John Baker and Daniel Shearns enabled the Methodists to gain their first victory in Conference cricket at the Somerdale Oval at their third attempt. Opener Martin Purchase top-scored with 47 for the home side.
Nailsea 3rds remain third after an emphatic seven-wicket win over bottom team Grendel 2nds at The Grove.
The visitors were shot out for just 74 inside 27 overs after being put in to bat. Jon Simkins removed Eden Coventry (13) and Laurie Coventry (10), two of only three Chessmen to get into double figures, and then Marcus Gaiter produced his first four-wicket return in Conference cricket. There were also three wickets for Mark Tiernan.
