ASMIR BEGOVIC is one month into his second spell with Yeovil Town but already he has seen a real improvement in the team this time around.

The on-loan Portsmouth goalkeeper had a brief stint at Huish Park last spring before rejoining the Glovers on a 93-day deal from the start of this season.

When Begovic first arrived he linked up with a side desperate for points to stay in League One.

The Canadian was rightly lauded for keeping a clean sheet in a 0-0 draw with Bristol Rovers and then suffered a heart-breaking 2-1 defeat at Carlisle when the Cumbrians scored a stoppage-time goal.

Less than a week later he was recalled by Pompey to cover for injuries at Fratton Park.

It may be early days, but Yeovil already look a better footballing side than the one teeming with loan signings from Premier League clubs, that struggled to find consistency last season.

A debilitating injury list forced boss Russell Slade to make 17 temporary transfers. This time around the manager has put his faith in fresh, hungry youngsters, many gathered from non-league football.

Today Yeovil go to Carlisle again. 'small club, big heart' is the manager's mantra and a new system – 4-4-1-1 – has prompted them to play a passing game.

Begovic said: "This is a better side. When I came here last year it was a depleted squad again but this year we have got to know each other well and we play good football and go out there looking for three points.

"The young players don't really know fear. They are hungry for success and have come through various levels and that makes them stronger. We have nothing to fear. The tougher games are always the better ones anyway."

Begovic recalls the trip to Brunton Park vividly. Marcus Stewart gave Yeovil a first-half lead before a Peter Murphy equaliser on 77 minutes and Scott Dobie's last-gasp winner.

"Carlisle is always a tough game," he said. "You have to travel a long way to play them and they are always strong at home. I played against them twice last year (for Bournemouth and Yeovil) and it will be a tough game for sure. But I think we will be ready for it and we will give them a good game.

"With Yeovil it was tough. We scored a goal and after that it was pretty much fight for your life and we couldn't hold on to the end.

"We have probably learned from that and I am sure if we come to the same situation we will cope better."

While Yeovil were losing 5-1 to Middlesbrough in the Carling Cup on Tuesday, Begovic spent the first half of the week back in Hampshire.

"This week I went back to Portsmouth and trained with them Monday and Tuesday and came back to Yeovil on Thursday. That's a normal week for me," he said.

"It is good to be in contact with my parent club and get the coaching there but as time goes on I will stay more with Yeovil and stay more in touch with the lads. The training here is good – it is just the arrangement we have.

"I heard that Middlesbrough was a good experience but a hard game. I was with Portsmouth last year when we lost twice to them, so it is always tough."

Begovic was unable to play so fellow Canadian Josh Wagenaar again featured between the posts.

"I was not pleased I couldn't play in the Carling Cup but they are the rules," said the Pompey man. "You can't play in it when you are on loan from a Premier League team so you have to move on.

"Me and Josh go back a long way and off the pitch we will always be friends but on the pitch you always want to better yourself. We will always fight but there are no bad feelings, although we will always have banter between us."

The good news for Yeovil is that Dobie is midway through a three-match ban today. However, his replacement on the right flank is the former Scunthorpe flyer Cleveland Taylor.

Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate has confirmed he will not be releasing young defender Rhys Williams just yet. The centre half is now part of the Boro matchday squad.

Yeovil's only specialist central defensive cover is former Reading centre half Aaron Brown. He is currently signing week-to-week contracts but may now be secured on a slightly longer-term arrangement.

Yeovil Town (from): Begovic, Peltier, Forbes, Skiverton, Jones, Smith, Roberts, Tomlin, Murtagh, Way, Dayton, Warne, Owusu, McCollin, Wagenaar, Brown, Bircham.
