Kate Goodhead aiming for new heights at World Mountain Running Championships
Kate Goodhead is aiming to take her career to new heights at the trials for the World Mountain Running Championships this weekend.
The 24-year-old Bristol & West AC runner heads to the Lake District for Sunday's trials race at Keswick optimistic that she can reinforce her burgeoning reputation as one of Britain's best young female mountain runners.
With Sunday's event doubling up as a trial for the Commonwealth Mountain Running Championships, Goodhead believes her preparations have left her in terrific shape.
"I have been training so hard that I can't believe Sunday's race will be any harder," she said.
"The 9k race comprises two laps and includes 1,800ft of climbing and descent on Latrigg and will be more technical than just running uphill. That's why I have been training hard on downhills around Slad and I have also driven over to the Worcestershire Beacon to train up and down that.
"I feel well prepared and, while I don't want to be too over-confident, I am looking forward to the event."
Goodhead won the UKA Mountain Running trials in June to earn a place in the Great Britain team for the European Championships in Australia, in which she finished eighth.
The 29th World MRC will be held in Campodolcioni, Italy on September 6, with the Commonwealth Championships two weeks later in Keswick.
"I would love to run both events," said Goodhead. "I have to make sure I finish in the top two to get automatic selection."
Jon Wills and Tom Merson are both running the 5,000m at the British Milers' Club Grand Prix Final at the new Cardiff stadium tomorrow night.
Wills will be in the A race, which will be run at 13mins 30secs pace, and in his current form looks likely to smash his personal best of 14mins 15secs.
Merson, who clocked a road best of 15mins 04secs to win the Yeovil 5k on Wednesday night, goes in the B race.
Steve Mitchell and Harry Webb are doing the 1,500m, while Ruth Mitchell and Debbie Niccol are also entered.
The H30 Pro Castle Combe 10k road race is being held around the motor-racing circuit on Sunday (11am). Entry details can be found online at www.runningdiary.co.uk or by calling Will Whitmore on 0780 9569303.
The Standish Woodland Chase 10-mile multi-terrain race is on Sunday and entries are taken on the day. Further information is available on the race website at www.stroudac.co.uk.
