Jousting fun for skatepark
The West Country Jousting Championship is coming to Cheddar next month to help raise vital funds towards a state-of-the-art skate park.
Stampede Stunt Company are staging the event at Petruth Paddocks on June 6, one of six venues throughout the West Country holding tournaments.
The entry fee is £5, children under 12 are free and all funds raised will go towards a £180,000 Cheddar skate park planned for the town.
Around half of the funds have been raised and it is hoped by staging further fundraising events, such as this family day, the goal can be reached.
Stampede stunt team member Karl Greenwood said: "We are delighted to be able to bring a show to Cheddar.
"We have kept the entry price low so that everyone in the community can come to see a day full of shows which otherwise would only be seen at a castle or county show, where entry for a family could be five times as much, so we are really looking forward to seeing everyone there.
"Our performers have worked on the live show circuit for many years, and so we have extensive experience in staging medieval days, jousts, stunt shows and demonstrations, from one-day county shows, weddings and special events through to full summer seasons at Warwick Castle and Lulworth Castle.
"Personally, I have staged over 500 jousting shows.
"Further history includes flying ourselves and our horses to Dubai to perform for Sheikh Mohammad's Al Kaheel horse centre launch.
"We will be working on the new Robin Hood movie Nottingham with Russell Crowe later this year."
Other attractions on the day will include a witch's ducking stool, horse archery demonstration, ferret racing, ale and cider bar, hog roast, medieval stalls and a circus skills workshop.
There will also be a fiery Jack Jester show and the Tournament of Champions featuring four knights on war horses.
"We hope that these tournaments will become an annual event, added Karl. "This year we are in Cheddar, Sidmouth, Okehampton, Tiverton, and Langport."
