Johnson to leave Bristol City
Gary Johnson is set to leave Bristol City tomorrow after more than four years as manager at Ashton Gate.
The 54-year-old has lost the confidence of his players, culminating in a half-time dressing room bust-up involving winger Ivan Sproule during the 3-2 defeat at Plymouth on Tuesday.

Gary Johnson is set to leave Bristol City
Johnson and chairman Steve Lansdown met tonight with the manager given the option to resign before he was sacked.
An club statement is expected tomorrow morning which will announce Johnson’s departure, probably by mutual consent.
City’s players have been asked to attend a meeting at Ashton Gate before training to officially receive the news.
Johnson took charge in 2005, won promotion in 2007 and City lost the Championship play-off final in 2008.
He signed a five-year deal in September 2008 and will leave with more than three years left on it, although not necessarily with the full balance of his contract.
The Londoner has faced heavy criticism from fans following 6-0 and 5-2 home defeats to Cardiff and Doncaster respectively this year.
But it appears the Plymouth incident was the final straw for Lansdown.
The players openly argued with the bench during Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at Reading and the discontent continued at Home Park.
Lansdown, the multi-millionaire co-founder of financial services company Hargreaves-Lansdown, is keen to bring World Cup football to a new stadium in Ashton Vale.
But for his club to lose Championship status would be highly embarrassing and damaging to his attempt to win the support of the Cup bid committee.
City are not yet safe from relegation, although they are seven points clear of the bottom three with nine games to go.
The Robins are set to be inundated with applications for the vacancy with assistant manager Keith Millen understood to be taking over as caretaker boss for Saturday’s game at home to leaders Newcastle United.
The man who denied City a place in the Premier League in the 2008 play-off final – Phil Brown – will have his supporters.
Brown was sacked by Hull City earlier in the week but he would appear to be a maverick choice.
Safer pairs of hands would be ex-West Ham chief Alan Curbishley – strongly rumoured as a replacement for some time – former Reading boss Steve Coppell and current Doncaster manager Sean O’Driscoll.
The former Bournemouth man masterminded Rovers’ 5-2 win at City earlier this month with a hugely impressive attacking display.
The softly-spoken O’Driscoll would have moved up to the Premier League last month but Burnley could not agree a compensation package with Doncaster.
Gary Megson has a track record for effective football but his Bristol Rovers connections could lead to fears of a repeat of Tony Pulis’ short-lived and acrimonious tenure at Ashton Gate.
If Lansdown wants to go for a young manager he could turn to Gareth Southgate. The former England defender was dismissed by Middlesbrough in August.
Another bright managerial prospect in the Johnson mould is current Exeter boss Paul Tisdale.
He has earned two promotions with the Grecians but it may be too soon for the former Robins player.
Millen has done the caretaker job before, when Brian Tinnion resigned in 2005.
Johnson’s departure leaves doubts over the Ashton Gate future of the rest of his coaching team, not least his brother and chief scout Pete Johnson.

“Jamie, people flocked to football at both clubs because it used to be a truly working mans sport, my dad's generation would often go to both clubs home matches and that's how I started, he took me to both. At 46 I am only now losing the silly rivalry nonsense and can see the benefits of both clubs pooling, it'll never happen but it would do good.
Onto the main issue, I would be surprised if any of the guys you mentioned would apply for the job other than O'Driscoll. I think many are now concious of how both Bristol clubs get rid of managers and so would be remiss of them not to be cautious. My City friends were very happy with Johnson but now turned. Why are both Bristol clubs so fickle ? I am afraid it's this expectation of style and of wins together. I for one am happy to win but many now want to se it in style and it's a downfall. Build on the wins and style may come from the confidence built up upon the winning mentality.
I did not know he ( Johnson) had atacked players in the dressing room, he shoul,d have been sacked immediately for that, in any other job he would have been dismissed so maybe this could have been avoided as it does look like sour grapes now.
Good luck boys. Will be watching with interest.”

“CityPete has got it all so wrong about the moaners. A defence that leaked goals, a team that ran out of steam on 90 minutes and shipped last minute goals while scoring an absolute hat fall at the other end tells the story. The players are paid well and what did they serve up! Those who swallowed the 'play offs line' throughout were so so gullible. To get to the Premeiership from the Championshoip you need a Premiership defence and a Championship attack. We had neither and so the period of self delusion is over and realism set in. Let's hope we get a quality and motivational manager and also find a good leader on the pitch too. That's a start then two good centre halfs, a ball winner in the middle of the park as well as a quality creative player then we are on the start line.”

“Thank you Gary for bringing us so close to the Premiership and then it all fell apart. At the end of the day it is a team effort and for the good of the club time to part.
As Keith Millen is responsible for the defence and that's leaked goals I can only fear for Saturday against Newcastle as we ship 10 goals. We need a proven motivator as Manager and one on the pitch which we do not have. The match on Saturday will prove if the players are up to it in the Championship or if all the blame can be placed at the door of Gary Johnson!”

“City fans will always be thankful to GJ for getting us out of League One and with a bit of luck in the Play off final, we could even be playing in the Premiership right now.
There's no doubt that GJ had lost the dressing room, and from that moment on, he was a dead man walking. Twenty years ago you could rough players up at half-time but times have moved on. The modern player is very precious and just won't stand for it today. Player power rules I'm afraid. The fact Sproule recently lost a son may also have played a part in SL's thinking when he heard about the altercation with GJ.
Results at the back end of last season and this season have also clearly not been good enough and the football has been dreadful. City's form has been more relegation than promotion. The fact that they are still just 10 points off a play-off place despite such terrible form shows what a poor league this is.
With the squad Gary has at his disposal, City should clearly be doing much better than they are. To have a bench on Tuesday comprising players of the calibre of Hartley, Haynes and Clarkson shows that. Yet we seem to have gone backwards under GJ.
As to my opinion on the new manager, there is no question that Gary Megson has one of the better track records of the current crop of out-of-work managers but I fear City fans will not accept him as they strive for a big name. But if you want someone to get City in the Premiership, Megson has done it twice before with WBA. Phil Brown has also done it with Hull of course.
I fear Gareth Southgate is too much of a nice guy to really cut it as a manager and City won't appeal to people like Mark Hughes, Sven and Alan Curbishley, who yearn for bigger jobs.
Peter Reid is on the lookout for a number one position and could be an outside bet. I know Steve Cotterill has also long coveted the job.
Personally, I would love to see Steve Coppell take it. A hard man when he needs to be, and his teams always play classy, attractive football. I'm just not sure how keen he is to return to the game, he looked a tired and beaten man towards the end of his Crystal Palace reign but he may have recharged his batteries since he left. Lets hope so.”

“At the moment we need more players like Danny Haynes who have the die hard attitude to play for Bristol City Football Club. He is def. the player who never says die. The lads need to learn from this attitude.”

“@ julian, in the early days football was played in a very different manner and style, but the point was the crowds flocked to Ashton Gate because the lure was to watch quality teams that possessed good players who played entertaining football.
You can play good attacking football and defend from the front at the same time in today's game...ironically we have the squad to do this, but for some reason enthusiasm is nil.The West country support hasn't dwindled in fact it has become more potent in its realisation that success is only a win away!!
We just need to pull together and make Ashton Gate a Fortress.................COME ON BRISTOL CITY............COME ON YOU REDZZZZZZZZZZZZZ”

“Case in Point Jamie. You don't just want success but attacking football so style and success. I say look at Chelsea and Tottenham, Mourhino was the most succesful ever and yet because he was deemed negative in style he was sacked. This is Bristol City's biggest problem, you just can't have it all mate. I know you won't welcome a Rovers supporters comments but it's true and I am one of those that went to ashton when in the first division of old. Fact is the crowds dwindled when there.
I think the expectations are way too high and your reach is over extended by your grasp. Shame. all these comments, a bully, nepotist, my good lord how did you tolerate him at all eh ?. Good luck, I truly mean that”

“Sad ending. All the best Gary.
Curbishley would be a fitting replacement if interested, we need experience.”

“Come on here real Bristol City Fans..and say exactly what you think!! Newcastle on sat a sell out...40,000 sell out at wembley in just 15 mins (quickest ever FACT!!) do we really believe in success or are we just a bunch of losers who only dream of it!!
This is Bristol and we have a football team who we know from the past can achieve big things and attract big crowds and not just large numbers but supporters who really want to see good attacking football with results!!and get behind the lads. I am sure we will get at least 25k to 30k every game if that happens. We did before!!
The Johnson era has gone lets get Gareth Southgate or similar and get on with it!!
COME ON CITY”
