Labour have announced their replacement candidate for the Police Commissioner role, after Bob Ashford was forced to step down yesterday.
The new candidate is Dr John Savage - a well-known businessman and is chair of the University Hospitals Bristol NHS Trust.

John Savage
Mr Ashford had to step down yesterday after he was told that an offence he was convicted of in 1966, as a 13-year-old, barred him from applying for the role.
Dr Savage said: "It is an honour to be Labour's Candidate in this election.

"I am determined to use my skills and experience to stand up for local communities in these elections.
"I fully understand the need for a new approach to resource allocation in these testing economic times but, the Government is making the wrong choices on crime, taking frontline police off the streets, weakening powers to deal with anti-social behaviour, and opening the door to the privatisation of core services - I will fight the impact of these reckless changes."

“Me again Charles.
"It against all my basic instincts to defend anyone from the Labour Party; but Bob Ashford has suffered a great injustice."------------Charles,do not be too upset about defending Bob Ashford,he is Labour in name only,in fact exactly the same as New Labour who for 13 year's carried out Tory policies (and who were often admonished by the Party on the opposite bench for doing so) masquarding as Labour, and who were in fact more Tory than the present government, at the last general election I voted Lib/Dem to keep the Tories out (believing better a Tory government I knew, rather than one I did not, reminds me of a song made famous by the late Norman Wisdom "what kind of fool am I" however the current leader of HM opposition seems to want to take the Labour Party back to it's roots which certainly will not meet with your approval, but at the very least we,the electorate will have a far better choice next time than we had the last time, ie Tory,Tory,or Tory.”

Sounds pretty good to me. The best of the candidates so far (apart from the unfortuneate Bob Ashford). I'm not too keen on some of John Savage's pronouncements on wider political issues but I might vote for him for Police Commissioner, not least because of the weak opposition from parties who are cutting the police too far and too fast from Tory Ken Maddock and Lib Dem Pete Levy.”

“Wonder why Savage thinks he's a good candidate to be Avon and Somerset's first Police and Crime Commissioner when he failed to ensure a fair, open and transparent Inquiry into histopathology misdiagnoses at his Trust.

“@teknologia
Fella; when you are as intelligent with as much experience of life as I am; and paying as much tax to support these services, your opinion may be valid. . Trust me, you aren't. . . I'd appreciate it if you didn't start with the personal invective, or I will be forced to respond.”

“Nicktompson - "The point I am making is how do these figures measure up against the forced standing down of Mr Bob Ashford from standing as Police commisioner for what can only be described as a farce, perhaps his misdemeanor some 50 years ago was NOT serious enough when compared with the above statistics"
A very fair point - not surprised that Charlespk didn't get it though. He's a sandwich short of a picnic most of the time. Take his statement ' 'Common Purpose' graduate John? ' and the link to a weird website. He appears to be a believer in some sort of conspiracy theory with respect to the EU. He probably believes Armstrong didn't land on the moon and the CIA not Islamist extremists flew planes into theWorld Trade Centre, and the UN is conspiring with the worlds scientific community and many governments around the world to make up climate change for their own ends. Nuts or what!!”

“I wasn't arguing with you. . There is not a bigger critic of current policing than me. Particularly traffic.
