John Cleese arrives in Bristol for zoo shows
Veteran funnyman John Cleese took a trip down memory lane
today with a visit to Bristol Zoo - the venue for many a family
-
day out as a boy.
The Monty Python actor and star of Fawlty Towers is in the
city this week to perform three nights on stage at the zoo in
aid of its conservation projects with broadcaster, Chris
Serle.
The 69-year-old actor who was born in Weston-super-Mare but
who now lives in Los Angeles said: “Bristol Zoo is like a third
home to me. My father bought a season ticket when I was a boy
so we came here regularly for family visits.
“My favourite animal was always a little lemur who lived at
the zoo which sparked a lifelong passion for these
creatures.
“The good thing about zoos and human beings is that they can
educate each other as to how to help to save both species. The
idea of a planet without tigers is a terrible thought.”
John Cleese and Chris Serle will be on stage together for
three nights at the Clifton Pavilion theatre in the zoo
grounds.
John said: “The evenings will consist of some old film clips
of himself and some well polished jokes.”
The comedian was less than impressed when he was asked about
his hometown of Weston-super-Mare.
He said: “I was very disappointed. It's really not very
beautiful anymore. There used to be bits of it that were
lovely.”
Keith Morris, Weston Town Council leader, said: “I am very
disappointed that he should make such disparaging remarks about
his home town.”
But Mr Cleese also seemed to indicate he thought people who
lived in the Somerset town would agree with him.
He said: “The Westonians are aware of it and I think they
are going to start doing something about it. It was very sad to
see it – very unattractive.”
* A few tickets are still available for John Cleese in
conversation with Chris Serle on Wednesday, Thrusday and Friday
price £40 if they mention “Fierce creatures” on 0117 974
7300.

“Have fun with the lemurs and other fierce creatures. Wish we could be there. Why not come to Canada and help the CBC with their comedy? (Maybe you shouldn't post this) Bye for now. Wendy”
