Job losses for Bristol B&Q staff
Fourteen employees at the B&Q store in Longwell Green could be made redundant.
The DIY retailer says it considering redundancies because its Longwell Green shop, on Gallagher Retail Park in Aldermoor Way, is "overstaffed for the number of customers it serves".
It is understood that eight members of staff working day shifts could be made redundant and the remaining jobs losses would be from the night shift workforce.
One member of staff at the shop, who asked not to be named, criticised the timing of the announcement, which was made on Tuesday evening.
He said: "If the management knew the store was overstaffed earlier in the year, the redundancies could have been made then and not so close to Christmas – it's pretty shoddy from what's supposed to be a caring company.
"The people who will be made redundant have children and work hours to fit around their families.
"We've also been told the shop has made a lot of money this year."
Jackie Hoyte, spokeswoman for B&Q, said: "We are proposing to make some changes to the way we staff our Longwell Green store in Bristol as it is currently overstaffed for the number of customers it serves.
"We will do our utmost to find an alternative role for those affected by this change but as a last resort there could be a risk of redundancy for 14 individuals. As we are now in a period of consultation we are unable to comment further."

“I must say that whenever I go into this store it seems quite a few of the staff have little to do; you quite often see two or three staff standing together having a chat amongst themselves with little inclination to help shoppers looking for assistance.”
