JAN Denley, an active member of St Andrew's Church in Congresbury and a former foundation governor of St Anne's School in nearby Hewish, has died aged 60.
She and her husband Paul moved to Congresbury in 1977 and have been very much involved in the life of their parish church ever since.
Jan was born in Maryport, Cumbria, but spent most of her childhood in Leytonstone, East London, where her father was a probation officer.
She went to Leicester University in 1968 to study sociology and met Paul.
They married in 1973 and moved to Bristol where Jan got a job as a careers officer and Paul became a teacher at Nailsea School. Their arrival in Congresbury was followed by the birth of Anna in 1978, and Simon in 1980.
Jan and Paul were quickly drawn into the religious and social life surrounding St Andrew's Church.
She gave up her job with the Avon Careers Service after her children were born but still found time to involve herself in the setting up of a local group of the National Housewives Register, the village's Orchard Playgroup and also to help out with Congresbury Guides.
At home, Jan became very knowledgeable about trees, shrubs and perennials and enjoyed nothing more than pottering about in her garden.
She served two periods as a foundation governor at St Anne's School in Hewish, working with classes, which she loved, and reorganised the school library.
A cremation service will be attended by immediate family on Mondayat 2pm, followed by a service of thanksgiving at St Andrew's Church in Congresbury at 3pm.
No flowers, but donations in lieu to Weston Hospicecare, Jackson-Barstow House, 28 Thornbury Road, Uphill, Weston-super-Mare BS23 4YQ.
