He has never missed a day of school, and is hailed as an example to all his fellow pupils because of his attitude, politeness and hard work.

Jake Winter will soon leave Filton Avenue Junior School, but for the last few weeks of term, he will be as busy as ever, and of course, not have a day off sick.

"It's not that I'm never ill," said 11-year-old Jake, "it's just that I try to have my illnesses at weekends or in the school holidays."

As well as his 100 per cent attendance record, Jake, who lives in Keys Avenue, Horfield with his dad Rob, mum Sue and older sister Danielle, has an impressive list of achievements.

He is a chairman of the school council, a house captain, peer mediator and has achieved 50 merits in his school career for exceptional achievements, a very special honour for which he received a plaque at a special assembly that his parents, who both work for Bristol Timber Store, attended.

Jake said that he tries his best in everything that he does and always looks at ways in which he can help his friends and other pupils in the school.

"I like to help people," Jake said. "If someone does need help, I try to do the best I can and try to understand what the problem is before speaking to a teacher.

"I will really miss the teachers here when I leave. They are all really friendly to me, and I like how they treat me.

"I have got lots of friends as well, and I am pleased because a lot of them will be coming with me to Monks Park School.

"It's going to be a bit weird leaving Filton Avenue. We are at the top of the school and we are the biggest, but at Monks Park we will be the smallest.

"It will be a bit weird, but I'm definitely looking forward to going to a new school, and I already know quite a lot of people through my sister who is in Year 8."

Deborah Skuse, one of Jake's teachers, said that he was an exceptional pupil.

She said: "Jake is someone you can rely on. Every term we have a joke with him about the fact he's always there when all the names of pupils with 100 per cent attendance records are read out in assembly.

"You can always trust him to do something, and if you want something done he will do it straight away, and he always does it smiling. There's never a moment when Jake doesn't have a big grin in face. He is a real asset to Filton Avenue Junior School and we'll all really miss him when he leaves."
