Gloucestershire cricket legend Jack Russell looks set to return to the county in a new off-field role.

The former England wicket-keeper is currently discussing a deal which will see him act as a scout, mentor and coach during the forthcoming season.

New director of cricket John Bracewell wants the 45-year-old on board for the start of the 2009 campaign and the Post understands Russell is close to agreeing financial terms with club chief executive Tom Richardson.

Bracewell confirmed: "I've already had several conversations with Jack and I expect I will be having more in the very near future. We have a role in mind for him, involving scouting for new players, coaching the wicket-keepers and working with our Academy kids.

"Jack has tremendous knowledge and experience and is a well-respected figure in the game. He is keen to come on board and help and we want him here."

Injury forced Russell to call time on his illustrious playing career in 2004, after which he concentrated on his alternative living as an artist. But he was persuaded to return to county cricket last year, joining Gloucestershire CCC as first team mentor following the departure of Mark Alleyne as head coach.

Russell insisted the job was a one-off, but underwent a change of heart when Bracewell signed up for a second stint as director of cricket at the end of his sojourn as New Zealand coach.

He is now set to return in a full-time capacity and his appointment is expected to be announced before Gloucestershire open their County Championship account against Surrey at The Oval next Wednesday.

Chief executive Richardson said: "We've offered Jack a role and it's one he's happy with. We're confident he will be with us for the new season, but we're still talking and we're not quite there yet."

Bracewell wants Russell to front the county's scouting operation, a role which will require him to travel extensively throughout the shires.

"Jack has made a number of contacts over the years, has a good relationship with the other counties and is held in high regard," said Bracewell.

"It will be handy to have someone who wants to watch cricket and who knows what he's looking at.

"We're looking for younger players and established county professionals and Jack can help improve the depth and balance of our squad and create additional competition for places.

"He will work alongside Owen Dawkins and, between the two of them, we believe we can cover most of the bases."

Russell will continue to work with Gloucestershire keepers Steve Snell and Steve Adshead on a regular basis.

Bracewell added: "I know both keepers appreciate Jack's experience and knowledge and so do the Academy kids.

"I hear Jack did a lot of good work as a mentor last season and that's an area we want to involve him in again."
