Bristol City loan signing Chris Iwelumo is likely to decide his own future in the next couple of days.

On loan from Premier League Wolves, the big striker has made a huge impact since moving to Ashton Gate, helping City take eight points from six games to move clear of relegation trouble.

Robins boss Gary Johnson has made no secret of his desire to keep Iwelumo at Ashton Gate, while Wolves manager Mick McCarthy appears to be content to allow the Scottish international to remain put for a further month, provided he has the option of a 24-hour recall.

If Johnson and McCarthy, who are firm friends, can reach an agreement over the weekend, the final decision could rest with the player himself and his family.

Married with children, Iwelumo is currently residing in a Bristol hotel, away from his family home in the Midlands.

Johnson said: "There is a dialogue between Mick and myself and we have spoken this week.

"Mick was at our game against Palace in midweek and, when we spoke, the conversation inevitably turned to the subject of Chris Iwelumo.

"We're going to have to leave it until after the weekend, just in case the situation changes. Mick might have some injuries up at Wolves or Chris might get injured himself.

"But Mick knows we would like to keep him. The best that could happen is that we take Chris for another month with a 24-hour recall for Wolves.

"That is what we would like to happen and, hopefully, that will suit everyone. If Wolves want him back at any given moment, then they can have him.

"But then Chris has to make sure that he is okay with that and his family are OK with it.

"He's enjoyed his football here, he has certainly been a great lad to have around the place, and we've all enjoyed his company."

Iwelumo was due to make what could be his final appearance in a City shirt in today's Championship fixture against Reading at the Madejski Stadium.

Should Johnson succeed in keeping him for a second month, the 32-year-old will be eligible for Tuesday's trip to Plymouth and subsequent games against Newcastle, Barnsley, Peterborough, Nottingham Forest, Sheffield Wednesday and Swansea.

“I'm hoping the attraction of being on the shop window from the expected drubbing on tv next week against Newcastle might pursuade him to stay a bit longer.

Trouble is we're bad enough with him in the team and he's one of our best players - got to get 2 wins from somewhere but god knows where!

Never known a season like it!”

“Playing week in, week out for Bristol City a struggling team in the Championship while staying in a local hotel?

Or being a regular sub for a Premier League struggling team while staying home with your family.

Much as I hope he'll stay, no one could blame him for zooming up the M5 asap.”
