Investment pays off as Clevedon beat the weather to whitewash Bristol West Indians
CLEVEDON splashed out £6,000 on a new set of covers and side sheets before the start of the season. And that investment paid out another dividend as John Bachelor’s side cruised to a ten-wicket home win over Bristol West Indians to move back to the top of Bristol & Somerset in the Globe Sports West of England Premier League.
After losing the toss, struggling BWI were shot out for just 81 in less than 26 overs by Wayne Kylander (6-38), who then smashed a quickfire 43 as victory was secured 30 minutes or so before the rain rolled in.
Bachelor said: “We took the covers off on Saturday morning and the track was solid, an absolute beauty.
“The club’s lost only one home league game this season to the weather, and that’s because it started raining halfway through. The covers have made a world of difference.”

Old Bristolians Westbury led the division by 13 points at the start of play, but were washed out at tea away to Bedminster.
That curtailment allowed Clevedon to edge back into pole position by a point, although a tough test now lies in wait on Saturday at third-placed Minehead, who eased to an eight-wicket win at Bishopston.
The home side were dismissed for only 67 by Tom Wright (4-5) and Darren Sherring (4-19).
Brislington, though, returned from Taunton with a 62-run win under their belts after reaching 222-7, Lloyd Hobson top scoring on 61.
Hobson then returned 2-19 from ten overs with Courtney Forrest also striking twice as the home side were pegged back.
Only one game was completed in Bristol & North Somerset, Twyford House moving up two places to third thanks to a six-wicket home triumph over Lansdown. Tom Armfield (2-20) and Mark Fowler (4-33, both from ten) made the early breakthroughs before Ross Sutton tidied up the tail, finishing with 3-20, as the Bath visitors were dismissed for 98.
Twyford then eased to their fourth win of the campaign in less than 21 overs, opener Sutton top-scoring with 23.
In Premier Two, Weston-super-Mare slipped by 124 runs at Warminster, who rattled up 213-8 after losing the toss, Shabil Ahmed claiming 3-37.
The visitors were then dismissed for only 89 in under 26 overs, Gary Morgan carrying his bat for 41 with John Davidson (16) the only other player in double figures as Peter Hickerton finished with 6-33.
Premier One leaders Bridgwater’s unique record of defeating the weather came to an end at Bristol, who reached 191-9 off their 50 overs before the rain brought the match to a close.
Opener Max Finzel top-scored with 67 against Mike Coles (3-46), Stefan Jones (2-20) and Chris Skidmore (2-32).
Second-placed Bath took advantage of this abandonment to cut the gap on Bridgwater from 32 points to 19 with a ten-wicket thumping of Gloucester City Winget.
Simon Marchant bagged 6-31 as the struggling newcomers were dismissed for 92, Alex Barrow then blasting 74 off 58 balls as victory was clinched in less than 20 overs.
Somerset’s Pete Trego returned to home club Uphill Castle to take 5-13 and help set up an eight-wicket win over Bishops Lydeard in the Somerset division. The visitors were dismissed for 77 before Uphill eased to a victory that took them out of the bottom two and up to seventh place. Trego also opened the batting, but was bowled for ten, by Mark Thomas.
