The Bristol Post

AT the very beginning of the First World War, Avonmouth became a strategically important military depot from which troops and equipment were dispatched to the Western Front.

One of the key features of this was the establishment of a remount depot at Shirehampton that stabled and supplied more than 300,000 horses and mules to the front.

No visible remains of this activity survive and, despite its large size, little is known about the men, animals and facilities that once performed such an important role.

But I believe that people in Avonmouth and Shirehampton may have found artifacts relating to the period, such as horse shoes or military badges, pieces of pottery etc.

On the afternoon of Sunday, March 17, we are inviting residents to come along to the Public Hall in Station Road, Shirehampton to learn about this important heritage, to share their own information and to meet experts who will be able to identify any artifacts.

Also on display will be copies of letters that were sent from Shirehampton Remount Depot in 1916 plus a plan of the area and a few images from the time.

The Heritage Lottery funded Avonmouth and Shirehampton First World War All Our Stories project aims to find out all we can about the important role that the area played between 1914 and 1918.

In addition to the HLF funding the University of Bristol has secured some further support from the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) which means that there will be experts and post-graduates helping at the event.
