Hurford surprised by cross-country success
Of all the winners at the Bristol Schools' Cross-Country Championships there can have been none more delighted that Rosemary Hurford.
While the victories for Floren Scrafton, Miranda Sadler, Zak Tobias and David McMillan were expected, 17-year-old Hurford's triumph came as a surprise, not least to herself.

"I didn't expect that," said Hurford, who is a student at Clifton High School. "It is my first win in the Bristol Schools' Championships and I'm pretty sure I have never finished in the top three before."
Hurford has excellent family pedigree with mum Alison and dad Jonathan both accomplished runners, while brother George is also a keen member of Bristol & West AC.
"I enjoy cross-country but orienteering is my main sport," added Hurford. "It is something we have always done as a family and I train with the South West Junior squad."
In fact, only recently Rosemary and her dad finished 17th from 180 entries in their family category at the two-day Original Mountain Marathon event, so her fitness levels are impressive.
"She has great stamina and never misses training," said proud mum Alison, who also coaches her daughter.
The younger age groups always throw up new names and both minor boys' winner Farhan Suleyman, of the Bristol Metropolitan Academy, and minor girls' champion Charlotte Banks could be ones to remember.
"My goal was the top 15, so I am very surprised to win," said the 12-year-old Clifton College schoolgirl Banks.
Miranda Sadler went one better than last year as the 13-year-old Colston's Girls' runner was an impressive winner of the junior girls' event.
"Everyone kept telling me I would win but I wasn't so sure," said Sadler.
Older sister Olivia should be pleased with her second place behind the talented Scrafton, who is one of the best girls in the country in her age group.
QEH student Zak Tobias added the inter boys' title to his previous junior success without ever looking stretched.
