VOLUNTEERS in Bristol are needed to help children living with the legacy of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster.

The organisers behind The Chernobyl Children's Lifeline Bristol Link are appealing for host homes to help give youngsters a two-week holiday in the UK.

They will hold three presentation evenings to discuss their work and to encourage more people to come forward and help their work.

The Chernobyl disaster, pictured, took place in April 1986 but the effects are still felt in Belarus.

The radioactive fallout was 90 times greater than Hiroshima and the World Health Organisation state 500,000 children are as being at risk.

A spokesman for the group said: "For the last 19 years the CCLL has been bringing 18 children aged 10-11 over to Bristol for a month's respite holiday in July and August. They stay in pairs for two weeks and then return home.

"The good food, uncontaminated air, fun, love and attention will boost their immune system and help them resist the harsh coming winter. This might probably be the only chance they will ever leave impoverished Belarus."

The CCLL take the children out on activities during the day and previous trips have included Aardman Animations and Bristol Aquarium.

The meetings will take place on; Monday, February 13, at Amberley Baptist Church, Amberley Road, Patchway; Wednesday, February 15, at The Key Centre, corner of High Street and Charlton Road, Keynsham; and Friday, February 17, Emerson's Green Village Hall, Emerson's Way, Emerson's Green.

Doors open at 7.15pm for a 7.30 start. For more information ring Alan Elkan on 0117 909 9036, Clive Brett on 0117 932 7650 or visit www.ccll.org.uk/bristol.
