Hunt for 6ft tattooed man who has absconded from open prison

A MAN who threatened to kill someone has absconded from Leyhill open prison.

Dean Hammond, 32, was last seen at the Thornbury jail at 5pm on Tuesday. He has been serving an indeterminate sentence since 2006 when he was convicted for making threats to kill and possession of an offensive weapon. Hammond is white, 6ft tall and stocky, with shaved hair. He has tattoos on his arms and chest.

Detective Constable Nadine Partridge said: "Since Dean Hammond was reported missing we have been conducting enquiries to locate him and return him to custody.

"He has connections to the Southampton area and it is possible he may return there. I would appeal to anyone who has seen him to contact us immediately.

Anyone who has seen Hammond should not approach him but should contact police on 999.

    “I don't know why people run away from open prisons. The whole point is that they need to prove they are trustworthy before they can be released. So now he either is going to spend his whole life on the run, not being able to take a proper job, claim any benefits or pensions, and live under the radar forever, or he is going to get caught and get a longer sentence in a harsher prison environment. Why not just wait until release??

    I suppose it is because he is a criminal, this in itself means he is probably pretty dense.”
