Howell's maggot tactics gives him clear water from his rivals
FIERCE winds that blew umbrellas inside out and snapped a few poles unsettled both angers and fish and weights dropped well below par in the eighth round of Shiplate Farm's Individual Winter Series, fished at Bleadon, near Weston-super-Mare.
The top overall catch was taken by Steve Howell, pictured left, who clinched a comfortable 64-6-0 victory at Hawthorn Ten. Howell fished maggot close to the far bank and romped home more than 20lb clear of the chasing pack with a superb 64-6-0 of carp weighing between 2lb and 5lb.

The midweek showers of snow that added more misery to West Country travellers failed to affect the Avon Angling Midweek Open match, fished at Landsend Fishery, near Wedmore.
A well-stocked, almost overflowing Match Lake came up with a superb set of winter weights with the lion's share going to local expert Adrian Clark.
Clark poled a maggot hookbait over micro pellet and during the early hours of the match landed carp to almost 9lb.
A change to sweetcorn brought a few, late quality carp to his net and he sailed home 35-14-0 clear of his nearest challenger with a superb 81-8-0.
The runner-up and top of the silverfish category was the home team's Aaron Britnell, who poled a single maggot hookbait over a light caster feed at 11 metres centre off Match 11 and weighed in 24-0-0 of carp to almost 9lb plus a winning 21-10-0 of mostly skimmers.
Result: 1, Adrian Clark 81-8-0, Match 17; 2, Aaron Britnell (Avon Angling) 45-10-0, Match 11; 3, Alan Oram (Shimano/Dynamite Baits) 25-8-0, Match 5; 4,Tony Rixon (Mosella Avon Angling) 23-2-0, Match 24; 5, Des Shipp (Preston Innovations England) 20-3-0, Match 7; 6, Andy Hembrow 17-9-0, Match 1. Silverfish: 1, Aaron Britnell (Avon Angling) 21-10-0, Match 11.
