Hospital order for Bristol arsonist
A mentally-ill arsonist who set fire to a bed at a Bristol hostel has been sent to a restricted hospital for an indefinite period of time.
Martin Templeton was drunk and aggressive when he told another resident at the hostel in Filton Avenue he did not like someone in one of the flats and was going to burn it down.
He tried to carry out his threat in the early hours of June 9 last year.
Templeton, 22, who has received treatment for poor mental health, admitted arson.
He was seen drunk and behaving erratically as residents talked in the communal area of the hostel. One, Tracey Shephard, had gone back to her room in the loft when she heard the fire alarm for the first time.
When she ran downstairs she found Templeton fiddling with the alarm box. Just before 1am it sounded again and Ms Shephard found Templeton downstairs and a fire lit in the garden.
Templeton told Ms Shephard he did not like the person in one of the other flats and was going to burn it down – she was so alarmed she left and stayed the night with a friend.
When the fire brigade were called a third time they told police of Templeton's erratic behaviour and he was arrested.
Anjali Gohil, defending, said he was doing "extremely well" in his mental health treatment.
She said Templeton, an alcoholic, drank a lot that night but checked to make sure no one was in harm's way before starting the fire.
Judge Jamie Tabor QC said: "A judge must use his own experience to assess what danger lies and I believe there's a real risk of serious harm to the public until such time as your treatment is finished.
"With a somewhat heavy heart I believe a restriction order is required and I hope your good progress will continue," he told Bristol Crown Court.
