Horse riders should take care on roads

Reading the Evening Post on September 11, "another horse killed on the roads", what upset me so much was he took one hour to die.

When will these stupid riders learn it is not safe for any horse on our roads these days? As an ex-horse rider and owner, when I had my horse, you were safer. There were much fewer cars then.

Another horse was killed last week at Bitton and now one at Hutton. To me, these riders should have more care where they ride. Any rider should put their horse first, wherever they ride.

Where I live, in the last few years three had to be put down. One rider, 12 years old, took her horse out on a very bad road at 5pm, during rush hour.

Needless to say, a lorry hit it and it took a long time to die. She should never ride again. The rider doesn't suffer; the horse does.

Please give more thought to such a lovely animal.

A very upset animal lover.

Mrs Tuffy, Radford.

“All road users, cars, motorbikes, cyclists, and horse riders, should learn to be defensive. Everyone should be looking to see what the potential dangers should be and how to avoid them. Assume everyone else on the road is stupid and you'll be pleasantly surprised when someone isn't. Why don't people have any sense of self preservation?? It's irresponsible to take a horse on a road where it's being placed in danger, and the rider must take full responsibility for any injuries caused. Just as I do on my bicycle.”

“Well said Sarah! Roads were practicly invented by the horse and they have been used for transportation many thousands of years!
I am a horse owner and ill try and use every Bridle path going to avoid roads but it doesnt help when we got to face scramblers and 4x4 users which use them as a race track and then trench them up and make it even more dangerous for us to use so then we are forced to use the roads!

Id say ban all cars from citys and country roads and use horses there be very less pollution no stupidly over priced road tax to pay, over priced mots ,and stupidly over priced fuel costs.
using horses would be a very organic way of traveling you can also use there dung for your roeses!!!”

“Sorry, I've got a bee in my bonnet about this. Just because you have a right to do something - e.g. drive a car on a road - it does not give you the right to take away everybody else's rights just because you are slightly inconvenienced by their exercising them. Remember - roads are rights of way for all travellers, however they travel. They are not the private property of boy racers whose testicles have yet to descend...”
