Somerset and Gloucestershire have both been handed home draws in the quarter-finals of the Friends Provident Trophy.

Somerset, who remained unbeaten through the group stage, will host Sussex at Taunton on Saturday, while Gloucestershire, who were beaten by four wickets at Durham yesterday, have been handed a home tie against Nottinghamshire.

There is some doubt over when and where Gloucestershire's last-eight tie will be played, as the county are staging the NatWest Series one-day international between England and West Indies at Bristol on Sunday.

Gloucestershire CCC's chief executive Tom Richardson said: "Obviously we cannot play the Friends Provident Trophy quarter-final at home this weekend due to the one-day international being played here.

"Our preference would be to reschedule the game and play at Bristol between now and the semi-final in July, if necessary moving a fixture to accommodate this. However, this is easier said than done and the programme is very tight.

"Our second choice would be to reschedule and play on a neutral ground."

Richardson said talks would be held with the ECB today to resolve the situation.

Immediately after hearing the draw, Somerset CCC's director of cricket Brian Rose said: "It's a great draw and whenever you play a quarter-final at Taunton it is going to be a very exciting occasion. It doesn't matter who we play, because we will have a tremendous job on our hands.

"I think it is wonderful for the Somerset supporters to think that in the Friends Provident Trophy we have played eight games and got 15 out of a possible 16 points."

"Sussex are a very good side and are very well organised, coached and well managed, so they will prove to be a tough draw.

"There will almost certainly be a lot of runs and last week Phil Frost produced a belter for the game against Warwickshire before it was rained off.The toss could prove to be vital. You would be very doubtful of putting a team in first on a flat Taunton wicket because you would be chasing down a big score."

Rose added: "I think that we have sent out a message to all the teams that we have got three potential match-winners in terms of striking power, and we have also got several players who can come in and grit it out like we have today."

Somerset opener Marcus Trescothick said: "Sussex are a pretty decent side, but I think that some of their players will be on international duty."

The former England man added: "We have beaten everybody that we have played so far and we are playing a good standard of cricket.

"If we can maintain the levels like we have through this whole series then it comes down to the crunch games.

"These are the big games and we have got to perform under pressure, because that is what it is all about. If we want to win the competition then we have to get through the big games."

Trescothick went on: "It will be great to get back home in front of a big crowd, especially if we get good weather it should be a good day and, of course, we will be looking to send our supporters home feeling happy."

Draw for the Friends Provident Trophy Quarter-finals – To be played on Saturday, May 23 (Reserve day Sunday, May 24): Gloucestershire v Nottinghamshire (tbc), Lancashire v Essex (Old Trafford), Hampshire v Middlesex (The Rose Bowl), Somerset v Sussex (Taunton).
