John Hogan's former father-in-law said the justice system has "gone haywire" after watching the child killer walk free.

Hogan, who threw his six-year-old son to his death in Greece, arrived back in the UK on Monday after spending two and a half years in a psychiatric hospital.

His solicitor said that he being admitted to a similar hospital in Britain though he is free to live where he wants.

Phil Steel, 62, whose only grandson Liam was killed by Hogan, said it was his daughter Natasha and their family who were serving a life sentence while Hogan walked free.

Mr Steel, a former lorry driver, lives on the island of Bohol in the Philippines but returns to Bristol for three months every year to see his children and grandchildren.

He was at the home of one of his daughters in August 2006 when Natasha telephoned after Hogan had thrown Liam from a hotel balcony and then jumped with his daughter Mia, then two.

Mr Steel said: "It was August 15, three years ago. We had a phone call about 10pm. My daughter was on the phone in hysterics telling her sister what Hogan had done.

"Can you imagine how helpless I felt? She's a nurse, she saying she's seen injuries like those suffered by my grandson before and she doesn't think he'll make it. There's nothing I can do.

"As she's speaking on the phone the doctor comes over to tell her that Liam has died."

The shock affected Mr Steel's health and he spent a week in hospital.

He said Natasha, who has since remarried and started a new life in Australia, was very strong but would never get over her son's death.

"My daughter wants closure," he said. "But now she can't go home to see her family because he's there.

"She said to me 'I'm under a life sentence. He's got away with it'.

"I feel a lot of hatred for Hogan for what he did to my grandson. If you want to commit suicide fine, but don't take your kids with you.

"It hurts me because Liam was my only grandson. I was looking forward, like all grandparents, to seeing the various milestones in his life but Hogan has screwed it all up."

He said Hogan seemed a "great guy" and was an excellent father during the early years of his marriage to Natasha but suffered an "earthquake of psychosis" after a row with his wife.

He was cleared of murder by a Greek court in January last year and was transferred to a psychiatric hospital.

Two months later at an inquest in Flax Bourton, Avon Coroner Paul Forrest recorded a verdict of unlawful killing on Wheatfield Primary School pupil Liam, who died of head injuries.

But this finding was overturned by two High Court judges who found Mr Forrest's verdict flawed.

A second inquest must now be held.

Hogan's former home in Dewfalls Drive, Bradley Stoke, has been sold.

His mother Josephine is also believed to have sold her terraced home in Bedminster when she moved to Greece to be near her son.

Hogan's current whereabouts are not known.

“So yet again it's a member of the family bringing it to the press not John or Natasha. Of course neither of them can forget what happened and they can't move on because family members keep selling their stories to the press.”
