American superstar David Hasselhoff made a whistle-stop visit to Gordano Services on the M5 to pick up a chicken dinner.

Customers and staff were stunned to see the TV star stroll into the motorway service station at Portbury at around midday yesterday.

The star, famed for his roles in hit US shows Baywatch and Knight Rider and who is now a judge on America's Got Talent, walked into the Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant and ordered a spot of lunch.

Mr Hasselhoff, who was wearing a cream shirt, jeans and sunglasses, was accompanied by two men, one of whom was believed to be his minder.

The trio collected their food and then sat in the quiet area of the restaurant, signalling to staff they did not want to be disturbed while they ate.

When they had finished their meal, Mr Hasselhoff – affectionately known as "The Hoff" to his fans - spoke to customers and staff and signed autographs and posed for pictures.

Staff at the services said Mr Hasselhoff seemed in a jovial mood and handed out signed photographs with the words "keep smiling" written on the back.

He then visited the WHSmith store in the services before leaving with his entourage.

It is understood Mr Hasselhoff, 56, had been filming in Devon for the last three days and was returning to London when he stopped for a break.

No one at the services was able to officially comment about the visit by the superstar, but one staff member said: "There was a real buzz in the building when he walked in.

"A lot of people were quite shocked to see him. He looked every inch the superstar."

Celebrities previously spotted at Gordano services include husband and wife comics Lenny Henry and Dawn French, Girls Aloud, Fern Britton and her husband Phil Vickery, Rick Mayall, Bob Geldof and Paul Young.

Footballer turned TV presenter Gary Lineker is believed to have stopped in for a break last week.

“Well he should have been cycling and showing his green credentials. And instead of chicken he should have had a lentil casserole.

Did I tell you I like to ride bikes? Except for going to work, mind.”

“Now if he'd taken a dump or stolen a magazine from WHSmith, that would've been worthy of printing. This is one of those banal, gossipy stupid stories that belongs in a tittle tattle publication. But, hey, it's news so let's not get too het up.”

“please forgive the spelling mistakes, I am wound up and typing faster than the keyboard can keep up with me.

I am so angry that the St Peters Hospice that do a fantastic job for the terminaly ill are going through hard times to the extent of closure, yet the Hoff gets front page space why the hell does he deserve it, St Peters are a god send to the induividual and the family yet they don't get priority in terms of publication over a self opinionated pratt like him.
Sorry but St Peters should be front page news with total support from all people that have the service provided by them.”

“Bristol Evening Post what are we meant to do? this guy is no more important than a Neuro Surgeon in fact as far as i am concerned a lot less important.
I would much rather the BEP followed our hero's in the medical world and thaned and praised them for all the lives they were saving rather than sing praises of pratts like him that do nothing to add value to human life.

P:lease spend more effort on reportingthe wonderful work the health service does.
before I go I am gutted that a wonderful organisation like St Peters Hospice is going through hard financial times and a service cut back through the lack of finances, lets get things in perspective get funding for them to help the terminally ill stuff the stars.
He wont give funds to help a vital service keep going.

    Sorry it winds me?”

“The BEP is becoming either a parody of itself, or has subtly changed into a satirical publication.

Whatever next? Former Showaddywaddy drummer spotted on the part of the M25 closest to Bristol?”

“Last year the BEP told us that Nelson Mandela was going to come to Bristol This year someone really famous stops at a motorway service station just outside the city. Who knows, maybe next year Susan Boyle will fly over the city on her way to a holiday in Spain.”
