1863: The Football Association formed following a meeting of 11 representatives from interested clubs at the Freemasons Tavern, Lincoln's Inn Fields, London.
1997: Jacques Villeneuve was crowned Formula One world champion after Ferrari rival Michael Schumacher infamously crashed out while attempting to take the Canadian out of the European Grand Prix at Jerez.

2000: Bradford signed Stan Collymore from Leicester on a free transfer.
2001: Great Britain overcame France 42-12 in their rugby league Test encounter in Agen.
2004: West Brom parted company with manager Gary Megson after he confirmed he would quit at the end of the season.
2006: England were knocked out of the Champions Trophy as a consequence of West Indies beating India by three wickets.
2007: Juande Ramos resigned as Sevilla coach. He took over at Tottenham the following day.
2008: Tottenham announced the appointment of Harry Redknapp as manager following Ramos' dismissal.
2008: Great Britain's Andy Murray defended the St Petersburg Open title with a 6-1 6-1 win over Kazakhstan's Andrey Golubev in the final.
