Historic Filton Pegasus window to be restored to its former glory
Delicate restoration work has begun on an historic stained glass window that graces the entrance of Airbus’ Pegasus House in Filton.
The St Philips-based Creative Glass Works have been commissioned to restore the Grade II listed 1930s window for the building – which was originally the headquarters of the Bristol Aeroplane Company.
The stunning window stretching over four floors in height and depicting the mythical Pegasus, was designed and created by South African born artist Jan Juta to be the focal point of the headquarters for the company.
The window also illustrates the history of Bristol aviation from 1910 to 1935 using images of aircraft designed and created by Bristol Aeroplanes including the Box Kite, the Bulldog and the first flight over Everest by a Bristol powered plane.

The historic building, now owned by Airbus, has been extensively vandalised over the past few decades but is now receiving a new lease of life, including the restoration of seven badly broken windows which are up to three metres in length.
Traditional techniques of painting, etching and kiln firing as used in the 1930s, will be replicated by Creative Glass Works to restore the damaged panels as accurately as possible. Each of the 41 panels will then be painstakingly cleaned to remove years of dirt and water damage.
James Paget, Director of Creative Glass Works said “This is a very exciting and challenging project for our studio and great for Bristol to see something so important being brought back to life.
“We have done extensive research into the history of the original window designs at Pegasus House, but if anyone has photographs or memories of the window before it was vandalised then they would be a tremendous help in our restoration project.”
The restoration is expected to be completed by the summer, and will be unveiled as part of a multi-million pound project by Airbus to build a new Airbus Aerospace Park.
