Historian appeals for Henleaze war memories
A Henleaze historian is appealing for memories and pictures of Henleaze during World War II.
Veronica Bowerman, who compiled The Henleaze Book, is now producing a presentation on Henleaze at War.
She said: "Some people may recall their parents digging for victory or have Anderson shelters still in their gardens.
"Others may remember the Americans billeted in local homes, or the temporary hospital in St Peter's Hall.
"The local bike shop sold out of bikes when the Americans were here and the local URC church on Waterford Road provided somewhere for them to go in the evening and provided sandwiches and cups of tea.
"Also, several houses were bombed in Henleaze we have a really good photo of a lady with a washing basket carrying some of her possessions from a house that had been reduced the night before to a pile of rubble.
"If anyone can recall this incident or indeed others such as the bombing of the houses at the end of Rockside Drive, by the former Roper's Dairy, that would be good."
