High hopes security light will deter prostitutes from Bristol cul-de-sac
A SECURITY light is set to be installed in a Bristol cul-de-sac repeatedly used by prostitutes.
Residents in East Park Drive, Eastville, have complained that sex workers have been bringing their customers back to a former garage block at the end of their street.
They say the prostitutes' activities can be witnessed from upstairs windows and say the area is often strewn with condoms and needles in the mornings.
Neighbours wanted a security light or CCTV installed to deter prostitutes from using the area.
Bristol City Council has now announced that £1,000 will be spent to install a light in the new year.
One resident in the street said a new light would be a good deterrent, but believed more would need to be done to stamp out the problem in the street completely.
The man, who asked not to be named, said: "The light it is a good thing, but it will need to shine brightly and will need to cover a large area to really catch people out.
"Even if this goes ahead, we think people will still use that area. We also need a sign there saying 'private parking' or 'neighbourhood watch' to make it clear those activities are unacceptable.
"But having said that, we shouldn't pre-empt the impact the light might have. This is definitely a step forward."
Since the Evening Post reported the residents' complaints earlier this month, the man says he has discovered evidence that prostitutes were still using the site.
He said: "When I went out there the other day, I discovered two condoms on the ground.
"It is still going on. The council needs to make sure this site is cleaned at the same time as all the other waste in the street is cleared up."
The area used by the prostitutes was filled with a block of garages until six years ago, when all but one was demolished.
Residents say the remaining garage, which is privately owned, still offers a secluded spot for sex workers to conduct their business.
Alley gates were installed in September to stop prostitutes using the paths behind residents' homes as part of work carried out by the East Bristol Multi-Agency Partnership to tackle the problem.
The bid for funding to install a security light was successful at an area housing forum held on Tuesday, November 25.
Bristol City Council says residents are not expected to remove litter associated with sex workers and should contact the drug and sex litter rapid clean-up team on 922 2100.

“The light may deter people but security cameras linked to the internet will surely stop people. No body wants to be named and shamed so worse for them will be the fact they'll be watched live online.
the council need to put up security cameras in the trees on the downs as well to stop dirty men wondering around in bushes and the same in all others areas where this kind of stuff happens.”

“Even if this goes ahead, we think people will still use that area. We also need a sign there saying 'private parking' or 'neighbourhood watch' to make it clear those activities are unacceptable.....................
So on that basis that residents think it will still go on, why are the council going to wast £1k putting the light up - if a neighbourhood sticker (as they suggest) will work.......... next they will be complaing the light is too bright and keeps them awake at night......
... I do understand it is not a nice thing to have on your doorstep though.”
